Updated 2 hours 51 minutes ago A discussion among students at Oberlin High School in Oberlin, La., about a mathematical symbol led to a police investigation and a search of one of the students homes, according to the Allen Parish Sheriffs Office.
On the afternoon of Feb. 20, detectives investigated a report of terroristic threats at the school, where they learned that a student had been completing a math problem that required drawing the square-root sign.
Students in the group began commenting that the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number, looked like a gun.

No. 1x1 = 1 and 0x0 = 0. Square-root does not work BELOW 0.
Good thing we don’t use SLIDE RULES anymore!..................
In related news, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has restricted use of the cube root sign, stating that no one needs a number greater than a ‘2’ in the radical to perform safe math
So they found no Guns in the house. Now what would have happened to me if I wrote the square root symbol and the police searched my house? And let say they FOUND firearms? Would that be a validation of those who complained that I drew a gun symbol?
Sick and getting sicker.
Yeah, a cube root or greater makes it look like there’s a hammer! More realistic!
the symbol, which represents a number that when multiplied by itself equals another number,
That description is completely incoherent and flat out wrong in every respect. The symbol doesnt represent a number. It represents a function. And even if it did represent a number, EVERY number when multiplied by itself equals another number.
What a mess.
Well, why not....
The Squaw of the Hippopotamus
Long ago in a plains tribe, three young men came of age and were to be married. They were sent out into the world with a bow and arrow and a knife to kill an animal the fur of which was to be used to make their marriage bed
Brave Eagle returned with a wonderful cougar hide that was tanned into a beautiful fur
Charging Bull returned with the hide of a young bear that was tanned into a beautiful fur.
Falling Rocks was not very successful. He returned with the skins of two rabbits and a squirrel. These were not large enough to make a marriage bed. His wise grand mother suggested he take them to the trading post and get a striped blanket.
Alas, the trader would not part with a blanket for such a minor return but offered a dusty hippopotamus hide that though rough was in fact large enough.
A year passed
The squaw of Brave Eagle presented him with a son
The squaw of Charging Bull presented him a beautiful daughter
The squaw of Falling Rocks presented him with twins, a boy and a girl
Theorem:
The Squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the squaws of the other two hides
Look around. I think that ship sailed.
What did the teacher think it was.
Well, in the students defense, that symbol looks like a radical to me.
Just be sure you get a CCW for any poptart bitten into the shape of a weapon
Ya know - with school adminstrators like this and a SecDef who talks like Patton and hugs trannies like Mrs Doubtire , I have to wonder who and what in America is still producing real heros and ordinary common sense and judgement
Math can kill? This is huuge!
No wonder the cops were called.
I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be...
When you follow your heart despite your head terminal stupidity will ensue...
What do I know though, I’m just a middle ages curmudgeon.
Indeed! The square root of 1 is 1.
Keep your voices down, because I hope nobody notices the shape of the state of Florida.
I was a nerd. Thats a lethal thing of beauty!
I thought “I’ll sell my K&E log log decitrig slide rule and the three others including the circular one on ebay”
Turns out they’re a dome a dozen
That's kind of the root of negativity. (Ba-dum-bump)
