As he should be.
Don’t put on badge if you are not prepared to run TO the sound of gunfire.

I have difficulty labeling this person in this fashion. I understand why it is being done, because it was his job. He SHOULD have done it.

But our own military history is full of people who froze up in combat and couldn’t function. Sometimes they got a second chance, and were able to do their job and it turned out to not be a long term issue.

Sometimes they didn’t, and that was it for them.

I have never been shot at. I hope that if that time ever comes and I am called on to do something...I can do it. I hope I can.

That dirty little coward who didn’t shoot Mr. Cruz... Aw. It doesn’t rhyme. Unlike in “Jesse James.”

Don’t be too hard on the fellow. As part of an elite police, he’s got a whole cowardly system behind him. Why do we see brutality and fecklessness by turns? That’s why.

A big burly type of guy calls in to our local radio station and scolds us listeners: “You don’t know what you would do in the same situation so people should stop mocking this guy”.

Go to hell.

He’s a coward, a nothing-burger, a waste of money, he will go straight to hell on his last breath, he is a zero, he is a bigger problem with stopping killers than taking away the gun of me, a widow woman with a small gun for safety.

And no, maybe I wouldn’t know how I’d react under the same circumstances but what’s the point?

IF...just sayin’....IF I had huddled in a corner of the building while young children inside were being systematically murdered....I would be....

.... a coward, a nothing-burger, a waste of money, I would go straight to hell on my last breath, I would be a zero, is a bigger problem with stopping killers than taking away the gun of me, a widow woman with a small gun for safety.....

You do something like this, you will be mocked and degraded the rest of your life and this fakey love stuff is so very wrong.

I don't want to defend this guy. I would like to think I would have gone in to try and stop this shooting. That said, I have worked in Federally leased buildings with armed security guards. The Federal Protective Service (FPS) has oversight of them. They are told that during an active shooter event, they are to maintain their post and secure the entrance for the arrival of law enforcement (LE). Most say they would probably ignore those orders and respond. many are former LE or military, so I believe that. They also assume they would get fired if they did respond against orders.

I think that is a stupid policy, but FPS does not want the guards getting in the way of first responders (friendly fire).

But my question is; what were this guys orders? If it was to maintain visual observation until LE arrives, I might cut HIM some slack.

If you remember Columbine, that was SOP. First to arrive setup outer perimeter until SWAT arrived. A lot of kids died because of that strategy. After Columbine, that changed in most jurisdictions, LE tries to standardize response training and tactics so, regardless of the responding agencies, first to arrive form an entry team and try to neutralize the shooter as fast as possible.

So I won't condemn until I learn more. If his orders were to assist in the arrival of additional LE, he probably does believe he did a good job, and the fault would be on the LE agency for using antiquated tactics. But I certainly understand the anger. Would not want to be this man.

Good thing he wasn’t in the military...what he did was potentially a capital crime: misbehavior before the enemy.

A courts martial probably wouldn’t be amused.g
