JUST IN: Broward Sheriff says armed school resource deputy who was on duty at Stoneman Douglas the day of the shooting has been suspended without pay pending investigation; Sheriff Israel says the deputy opted to resign/retire.

I’ll wait for the details to come out before I comment. Really, I think the only thing that will protect our kids is if we engage in a massive rebuilding campaign where our school buildings have to be enclosed in ONE BUILDING with secure front entrance and guarded safety exits. All students contained within one indoor complex, stories high, bullet-proof glass. Students have id cards to move between different sections of buildings (like in government buildings, must swipe id card to move to another section of indoor bldg). Put people to work by building new indoor school systems and hiring armed security personnel.
Yes, well, well, well... Again, cannot trust the police to protect people, especially in a gun free zone or anywhere. And they were sitting at the police station eating donuts and watching 20 minute old video feed. Embarrassing. No wonder everyone is so anxious to divert attention to NRA, guns, and anywhere but the school, police, and FBI.
>>As I recall. The school grounds are 45 acres and he was on the other side of the school grounds. I dont fault him. He probably couldnt have gotten on scene in time, even if he ran.
I fault the school. That much property for 1 is dumb. They needed additional security staff and took the cheap way out.

God forbid FACTS from keeping FReepers from jumping to conclusions!
At times we are shameful as a forum.
The question MIGHT be — was he not where he should have been? If he has been suspended but will be allowed to retire that fits. BUT we don’t know.
That’s what it sounds like.
~snip~” Israel said. “But what I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position - and he never went in.”~snip~
THEY HAVE VIDEO. The ARMED deputy did not enter the building.
(Not yelling at you, just yelling)
This is really not surprising. If you have a worthless officer in your department, but he can’t be fired, what do you do with him?
Reminds me of “we waited for the shooting to stop” from Columbine.
Trump tweets about EVERYTHING. Why hasnt he attacked the Sheriff and the school system?
“We’re not going to disclose the video at this time, and we may never disclose the video, depending on the prosecution and the criminal case,” Israel said. “But what I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position - and he never went in.”
When asked by a reporter what Peterson should have done, Israel said the deputy should have “went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer.”
“Probably threw his gun away and hid in broom closet at the first shot.”
Like the “bank guard” in the current TV ad that says he’s only a “monitor.” Then he says to the customers, “Its a robbery!”
Nope. USSC ruled the police have no obligation to put themselves in harm's way to protect citizens. Can't be sued for not acting on this.

Another cop said he saw him there hiding behind a pillar
“Can’t be sued for not acting on this.”
The question is - can he now live with the shame of doing NOTHING while his charges were being slaughtered?
I don’t think I could...
He stationed himself outside building. And stayed there. HE NEVER WENT IN!!!!
Too soon...give him time. As these details come out, he’ll lower the hammer...believe me :)
This could end the argument in favor of armed guards in the schools. They would argue that the guard could absent him/herself in a time of crisis.
Years ago teach muni had there own PD and I’m not sure exactly when it changed but BSO took over all of them.
Things went down hill after that including my home town of LDBTS
“The question MIGHT be was he not where he should have been?”
That’s the issue. Since suspension and resignation were options, I have a feeling he wasn’t doing his job. But if he were just in another section of the school grounds doing his job, then there’s no liability, and no suspension or resignation would be considered.
Seen it! Isn’t there one with a dental “monitor” to?
teach muni = each muni
