Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today.
The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said.
The rifles will not be fully automatic and will only be handled by deputies who are "trained and qualified" to operate them, Israel said.

I'd be more than happy to if they'd let me. I'd even do it for free. After all, MY kid is one of the ones I'd be protecting.
Boom ! .....:o)
Yote?
You can't know that.
The police will be carrying “assault weapons”. Liberals say assault weapons are only good for killings lots of people.
Let that sink in....
What part redneck are ya?...Ha!!!
I'd invite ya....if you can shoot.
Not far west I guess. I hope you didn’t mean Yutes.
The hell he doesn't. The simple fact that he's there in a school full of kids MAKES him a target.
I've got nothing against allowing teachers and staff to carry, but that is not the only solution, nor should it be.
Its a ruse to get everyone freaked out over AR 15s and disarm us with the freak out
I had some butthead slip a submachine gun in my ear at Leorandi Da Vinci airport in the early 80s while sipping a cup of cappuccino
My first thought was not “my don’t I feel all protected?”
I thought jeez what a police state. (they was worried about terrorists at the time) Police state will get the same reaction here.
Damn...I said yotes...thank God.!!
Not yutes....yotes!! : )
I'm in NE OK...you are welcome anytime.
They should not have to be trained and qualified. That could be used to keep a lot of good people out.
“I always wonder that when I see guards in places like airports and train stations. Are their guns loaded?”
Some drunk yob recently beat up two police in London. In front of Buckingham palace. One cop was pointing a submachine gun and then kept yelling “armed police” while getting his a** kicked to the ground. I’d venture a guess they arent loaded in London...
In times square they have SWAT on standby and some stand outside with AR-15s. Ive seen them unload and swap magazines up close. They are 100% loaded. And nearby they have backup ARs and whole boxes of magazines ready to go.
God bless plan A, but you know what they say about plans and contact with the enemy.
Now truthfully, not having any idea what the engagement will look like, other than you're the only unknown adult in a sea of kids, do you think your chances of neutralizing an unknown target are better with a concealed pistol, or a rifle?
AMEN Brother
That's one point. But a kid with a concealed pistol could walk by and shoot AR security man in back of the head. Sounds ugly, but if someone is really intent, taking out a uniformed guard/cop would be easy. Plain clothes has it's drawbacks in this application as well because they'll be immediately seen as a teacher/authority and can be shot from 50+ yards distance. No easy answers for those really intent.
You get one bullet, Barn, and keep it in your shirt pocket!
If you need any help offing your yotes do not hesitate to ask. Hill Country here.
You wrote,
Carrying those ARs will make them very visible and obvious first targets. You take out the guard first then the whole place is easy shooting.
Not true, entry point to a school should be through and armed guard and metal detector.
Most entrances are through a narrow area giving the guard a chance to see it’s a bad guy.
I like stealth. Stealth is my friend. Stealth is your friend.
But "guards" seldom get the luxury of stealth, so I'd take firepower as a runner up.
AR-15 is the non-military version of the M-16. I doubt school kids could tell the difference. That is what the sheriff said his men would carry.
