If Nikolas Cruz had been arrested for his prior criminal behavior he would not have passed a background check for a firearm purchase. The issue was/is not the background check; the issue was/is the lack of a prior arrest. Hence, the Broward County school and law enforcement policy is ultimately what failed.
I dont say this lightly, but the lawyers have the easiest case for wrongful death lawsuits in the history of this type of litigation. The county policy constructed by public officials (School Board and Superintendent), and the county law enforcement policy that was specifically and intentionally designed to ignore unlawful behavior (Broward Sheriff), is the very definition of intentional gross negligence.
Gross negligence requires a pre-disposition to create a system that is inherently dangerous. That is exactly what happened in Broward County, Florida.
Despite specific warnings that unstable and/or violent students would likely slip through the system as a result of intentional willful blindness; and despite specific warnings by police officers that these policies were dangerous; community leaders, district school administration and local police officials executed those policies anyway.
The resulting loss of life was entirely predictable; and it was predicted.
It will be very important for the families to screen out the lawyers carefully. Many of the top lawyers are aligned with high-ranking political Democrats. Political lawyers like John Morgan (Morgan and Morgan) are part of the ideological alignment (with Democrat politicians) that created the system of policies that led to the deaths of the students. Morgan would be a terrible lawyer for the families because he, along with many others would hold conflicts.
In my humble opinion, the victim families need to get good lawyers who are not part of the political system within the state of Florida; and must not -EVER- hire Democrats. There will be massive political pressure around the entire issue with all those who constructed the schemes being protected by the same system that needs to protect former President Obama.
ps. My apologies but my experience in trying to stop this years ago was met with hostility and the most intense political hate imaginable. As a result, I dislike the characters and officials around this story immensely. The Sheriff, the School Superintendent and every member of the Broward County School Board are complicit. They deserve no quarter.
My prayers are for the victims, their families and those who are hostage to these policies.
:P Paraphrase an old adage: Don’t give the opposition an ‘in’.
And, frankly, those on this forum should know better (nobody’s a saint).
Sounds like Coward County has set itself up as a sanctuary jurisdiction from regular juvenile justice.
Although I still wouldn’t suppport - and Trump would lose my support - how about an agreement with the RATS to raise the age for purchasing a AR-15 style-rifle in exchange for raising the age for abortion and voting to the same age as the proposed gun restrictions? I can’t see the RATS ever accepting that since today I heard some commie RAT legislature proposing lowering the voting age to 16!!
There’s never been a shortage of cocaine in S. Florida.
Douglas was a well known conservationist that kept carpet bagging yankees from paving the entire state and destroying it completely. The Everglades is an awesome place .

Raise AR-15 and the voting age to 21. (Military exempt)
Not intended as a slam against the Everglades or the effort to save it.
However, there is evidence to suggest that the kid was trying to emulate ELN/which has Hezbollah members, and Hezbollah maybe liked the idea of hitting a place named after someone like that.
I was struck by the irony of DJT draining the swamp vs the school’s namesake - don’t drain the swamp. Again not intending to slam the Everglades.
Schools across the country ought to put in metal detectors NOW.

As Sundance notes, same protection with Trayvon Martin.
No offense taken, we like our swamp. They may be hijacking MS Douglas’s past a bit to suit their agenda somewhat, IDK.
The truth be told, the kid was an aspiring mass murderer for quite some time. Nearly a year ago, Cruz posted that he wanted to do the same as the Texas Tower sniper 1966. He posted this at the end of a documentary on that same subject.
A forensic examination of his laptop will likely uncover a fascination and obsession with the various mass shootings, particularly ones at schools.
Nobody is talking about Hume. He could be behind the whole thing.
What a shame that more wasn’t done - tragic really.
I have relatives that DIED for these rights.
Yep. And the (((people))) they died protecting/saving/etc. are the same ones that allow the shootings to occur.
Head over to https://heartiste.wordpress.com; the last several articles on there discuss the Florida shooting, gun control, illegal immigration and their (((common thread))).
Wow! Thanks for posting that, it highlights complications.
Each school district will handle trouble uniquely. This depends on their discipline code and their state laws which may exceed any federal mandates.
My point is that this particular district, Broward - put into place a liberal non-punitive discipline policy that allowed for ‘Cruz’ to happen. Their goal appears to be to coddle and protect the criminal student at all costs disregarding the detrimental effect on the rest of the kids. State laws are not being enforced because the school district is interfering with state law deliberately in cahoots with the local LEO and local judicial system (all signatories of the plan).
They have determined that a juvenile delinquent’s rights supersede the rights of all the other classmates to get an education. They disregarded the health and safety of their students and their staff and put their very lives in jeopardy. They lost, bigly.
Parkland, Penn vs. Parkland, Fla. While Parkland*Florida ignored a seriously menacing threatening student who promised to kill, Parkland*Pennsylvania arrested two taunting relatively minor threatening students who intimidated their school.
No monkey business there. Student safety comes first!!!
The PA punks were physically removed from their school by the end of the school day and held in a juvenile detention facility until they were adjudicated and proven not to pose a threat to their fellow students. This happened December 2017.
While HIPPA and Federal education mandates must be obeyed, schools still have the power to deal appropriately and aggressively with dangerous students. It’s their duty.
To your final comment- When the system is dysfunctional (like-Broward) every parent who can afford to sends their children to private schools or home schools.
Great post. Two key issues....the mental health debate and the gun debate.
To be sure every teacher in that school saw the warnings signs with Cruz but the culture of their public educational system didn’t allow for a proper intervention and the legal system prevented “anyone” from taking strong corrective action. He was clearly off the chain and law enforcement were called to deal with him over and over.
He was also under the eye of mental health professionals but the laws, thanks to the ACLU, protect the individual to the point that unless they are an overwhelmingly clear danger to themselves or others....nobody can do anything. Even then, you can’t hold someone more than 72 hours before you legally have to put them back on the street. Most counties in the country don’t have enough beds to handle the level of the current mental health crisis. For the seriously mental ill....jail is generally the first stop until the condition is truly identified.
The Mental Health system is broken is this nation and until state legislatures wake up to that fact....these events will continue to happen. Our local news is filled with stories nightly of mentally ill people running the streets creating chaos.
The Broward sheriff gets it now and they have ordered armed law enforcement with rifles at every school. That’s the cost of a society that can’t isolate extremely troubled individuals.
The gun debate is a totally separate issue. Most of us hadn’t heard of a bumpstockj until the nutcase in Vegas showed up. Yes, lines in the sand need to be drawn regarding the level of lethal weaponry allowed.
If all my unhinged neighbors have SAWS I’ll probably have to have put land mines in my front yard to keep them at bay.
Sundance had an earlier article, which I’ve been blasting all over the internet:
In 2013, the Broward County School Board, in collusion with Eric Holder and the Obama Administration, put in place policies to prevent crimes comitted by minority students in school from being reported to the police!!!
Cruz was considered minority due to his last name. He previously brought bullets in his backpack! He comitted numerous crimes on school grounds, was caught, and never reported to police. They werent allowed to!
Please spread it far and wide. Copypasta this post to other school shooting threads. Post on facebook. Email to friends.
Broward County schools intentionally created polices from 2010 through 2016 that culminated in the 2018 mass school shooting in Parkland. We know this with great specificity because five years ago we warned Broward County Florida school board members this could happen.
We spend that on airport security - are not our school children just as valuable?
