Deputies called to suspected shooter’s home 39 times over seven years

Before Nikolas Cruz carried out his mass killing at a Florida high school this week, police responded to his home 39 times over a seven-year period, according to disturbing new documents.

Details about the calls to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office — obtained from police records by CNN — were not immediately available and it was impossible to determine if all involved Cruz.

But the nature of the emergencies at his Parkland home included “mentally ill person,” “child/elderly abuse,” “domestic disturbance” and “missing person,” KTLA reported.

And a schoolmate, Brody Speno, told the network that cops were called to Cruz’s home “almost every other week.”

If this guy didn’t fit the criteria, the act is worthless. Likely even more so after changes made to it in 2017. FL’s Baker Act should be part of this discussion.

And metal detectors. It’s sad, but that is reality. And they need to make schools a single point of entry. Schools are no longer big square buildings for the most part. The ones that are spread out with “wings” like the one I attended back in the 1950’s are nightmares to secure.

The cop targeted the suspect on the street because he matched the shooter description. It was not a happenstance contact.

From the description I heard, the school had over 3,000 students. And there were many buildings. It would be impossible to buzz everyone into the buildings one by one. A key card system would be better but probably chaos because kids for get their card, and a card can be stolen too...also the queues would be long waiting to swipe your card, even if you had a couple card ID card readers.

I can’t see how increased security could help these large schools unless you increase the amount of security to at least one per building. A nearby huge
high school has about 10 distinct buildings...and that doesn’t even count the
outdoor sporting areas like the football stadium or open exercise fields.

Well, not completely happenstance. But mostly. The description was fairly broad. That’s the point. The cop almost didn’t bother.

He was a teen male between 5’7 and 6’2 and alone...

In a related story, the sheriff is trying to cover up his incompetence for not incarcerating Cruz under the Baker Act for at least one of the 39 times his deputies had to go to Cruz’ house.

Yes every school in CA has dozens of outside doors and kids eat outside too daily. Warm temps and little rain.

Every classroom opens to the outside and there are lots of portables too in CA.

Psych wards are needed.

That's the big problem.

Community Mental Health Act of 1963 -- "mainstreaming" severe mental illness.

Instead of being treated, sometimes involuntarily, many end up in prison or jail. And they aren't treated at all.

I find it hard to believe that jailing the mentally ill is cheaper than treating them in mental hospitals.

And mass shooting victims aren't the only casualties of this. They are probably only a tiny fraction. Look at the Hepatitis A epidemic in California, spread by homeless people defecating in the street.

We have far too many crazy people wandering around and no one wants to do anything about them.

1. Law enforcement ignores.
2. Social workers ignore.
3. Teachers ignore
4. Mental health doctors ignore.

There are probably some other groups who have a responsibility to deal with crazy people, but each group passes off the problem to someone else.

Then when one of these crazy people hurt someone, the leftists start screaming for more laws and regulations to not let it happen again.

But no amount of new laws will help when those responsible do nothing under the current laws.

Wrong. The description was perfect. Age, height, burgundy shirt and the suspect was walking down a street less than a mile from the mass murder scene.

No doubt the second the cop laid eyes on the suspect, he was confident they had their man.

Thank you. That was some interesting reading. Never was a fan of “Mother Jones” but their article (1 of the 3) was nice with the timeline.

I don’t know what the answer is for psychiatric patients, hate to institutionalize them against their will and how do we decide whether or not they are a threat to society? I don’t even care at this point if they are a threat to themselves, just if they are a threat to others.
