Unless and until a physician, a set of physicians or a court decides that a person ‘mentally ill’ they are free to do as they please.
This particular young man apparently had legally bought the weapon he used from a registered dealer. He would have passed a background check easily, because he had no background.
Felons and people convicted of domestic violence are prohibited from owning a firearm.
But until you commit your first felony or your first domestic violence conviction, you can buy all the firearms you want, legally...........................
