Sick men and women do not hunt where guns await them. They will always look elsewhere. Our schools need police officers, perhaps many, retired, to protect our children. Just a thought. NOW!

Ummm.... to be allowed onto the school grounds they would *have* to be known to some of the school district employees...

Really? No shite champion of the obvious. This is rational conversation here. So, to your point, the school board, principles and Vp’s know the man or woman. Really?

"...not known to any employee of the school district..."

It will be somewhat challenging to hide the 55 y.o. guy with the short haircut who is hanging around the middle school nearly 200 days per year.

The FASTER Program is being adopted by many school districts in multiple states:

I really like it.

"Our schools need police officers, perhaps many, retired, to protect our children."

It's called retirement for a reason. Plus, gun regulations may change with retired officers. I was a peace officer, and could purchase a weapon on my badge while employed if I had wanted to, but once retired, I would have had to get a permit to own and carry a weapon.

The reality is criminals and the mentally ill are in possession of firearms. Gun control will not stop them. We’ve had many incidents of mass violence in ‘gun free’ zones yet children sit in schools defensless.

I’m not sure why they need to be unknown to anyone.

I’d rather they be visible and plentiful and aided by multiple systems designed to thwart shooters.

I also suspect hat once schools are fortified, school buses will also need similar, because they are also currently vulnerable to anyone who wants to attack them.

We need as a nation to brainstorm how to protect our kids. This is one good idea.

I also like the idea of teachers and admin unknown to the public being trained in firearms and being armed. So that no one knows where the armed protection is. I also think that a couple uniformed armed guards help. I went to a private high school that did have armed guards at the gates and I do think it deterred kidnappings. Makes it harder to get in.

Every school in America should offer a $500 annual bonus to 5-10 full time employees willing to train and conceal carry while on duty.

One of the prime reasons for uniformed versus plain clothes officers posted to guard assets is the concept of deterrence. Black hats will instinctively move on from white hat protected assets to greener pastures. Therefore, I would say that uniformed officers with specialized training and communications capabilities are preferable. Yes, more costly but can we spend too much guarding our most cherished possessions?

I’m in NY and our HS hired a retired Sheriff... but won’t allow her to carry a gun. 😉

We have millions of military Veterans and it’s time to take a stand. Wouldn’t cost the state a damn penny, two to three armed personnel at each school. There would be more volunteers than they’d know what to do with. Already trained and have proven they have the heart to fight and defend!

You could easily get National Guard Troops some ADSW money to patrol the large schools like this one. Getting from Title 32 to Title 10 money would be the hard part.

There were two police officers on duty at the school at the time of the shooting. How many more do you think are needed?

The liberal school faculty is so mentally deranged when it comes to legal gun ownership that they look at all of us as though we are criminal murderers in the waiting. How on earth are they going to accept armed retired police and military in their surroundings?

The police officer would be carrying a firearm and not known to any employee of the school district to deter the potential threat.

If he isn't known to any employee of the school district then don't you think someone wandering the school halls without anyone knowing him isn't going to attract attention and raise questions?

But don’t pay them minimum wage. Pay them a decent salary.
