'The United States is under attack': Intel chiefs say Russia targets midterm election

The heads of six top U.S. intelligence agencies said on Tuesday that Russian interference in American democracy has not diminished since the 2016 presidential race and is continuing in advance of this year’s midterms.

During a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., the directors of CIA, FBI, National Intelligence, National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency were asked to reaffirm their view that Moscow’s election meddling has continued since the election of President Trump. They did so unanimously.

“Frankly, the United States is under attack,” Dan Coats, the director of National Intelligence, said at the start of Tuesday’s hearing. “Under attack by entities that are using cyber to penetrate virtually every major action that takes place in the United States.”

“Influence operations, especially through cyber means, will remain a significant threat to U.S. interests,” Coats continued. “Russia probably will be the most capable and aggressive source of this threat in 2018.”

The director warned that the Kremlin will continue to use “sympathetic” spokesmen to advance its disinformation agenda, pushing propaganda, social media, “false-flag personas” and other means of influence “to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States.”

“There should be no doubt that Russia perceives its past operations as successful,” Coats added.

From the source reference, the Worldwide Threat Assessment deliver to the Senate:

Russia and Influence Campaigns Influence operations, especially through cyber means, will remain a significant threat to US interests as they are low - cost, relatively low - risk, and deniable ways to retaliate against adversaries, to shape foreign perceptions, and to influence populations . Russia probably will be the most capable and aggressive source of this threat in 2018, although many countries and some no nstate actors are exploring ways to use influence operations , both domestically and abroad. We assess that the Russian intelligence services will continue their efforts to disseminate false information via Russian state - controlled media and covert online p ersonas about US activities to encourage anti - US political views. Moscow seeks to create wedges that reduce trust and confidence in democratic processes, degrade democratization efforts, weaken US partnerships with European allies, undermine Western sanct ions, encourage anti - US political views , and counter efforts to bring Ukraine and other former Soviet states into European institutions.  F oreign elections are critical inflection points that offer opportunities for Russia to advance its interests both over tly and covertly. The 2018 US mid - term elections are a potential target for Russian influence operations .  At a minimum, we expect Russia to continue using propaganda, social media, false - flag personas, sympathetic spokes people , and other means of influenc e to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States

It’s time to close down the “intelligence community”. Could we not survive with just military intelligence?

This “threat” gets 2 paragraphs and 2 bullet points in a 28 page Assessment.

And US Intelligence continues to assess the dissemination of information as a “threat to US interests”. And this in the biggest open market of ideas the world has ever known.

I thought Trump was going to run the Neocons out of town?

If we had a functioning news media that had some small semblance of objectivity, the Russian “threat” would be a joke.

divide and conquer!

...and the U.S. mainstream media are the unwitting pawns spewing the divisive rhetoric incessantly, are so self absorbed and assume they are far too sophisticated to get played

So FIX IT ... go to paper ballots and if the damned millennials can’t wait 24 hours for the results, let them play their video games instead. Paper ballots make sense in this day and age for a list of reasons too long to list!

Russia has a long way to go to negatively influence elections if they want to compete with Comey and Obama.

I've yet to see it mentioned here on FR in any thread that talks about Russian propaganda (read that: "election tampering, LOL!")

VOICE OF AMERICA.

What does anyone think the Russians considered VoA "back in the day" blaring at Cuba 24x7? Or in the Middle East?

To say that we ourselves don't engage in a propaganda war (or counter-propaganda war) would be kidding ourselves.

Obama meddled in BREXIT, Netanyahu's election, Libya, Iraq, Iran and more.

C'mon folks - the Russians aren't doing anything we aren't.

We are more under attack from the RAT Party and their vote fraud.

The most vicious attack is from Mexico!

🙀🤔. No doubt in "cahoots" with DJT to undermine the (democracy) [s]elections for control of the house. So, how in the heck have we allowed the U.S. to be referred to as a democracy? No more civics classes? Hmmmm. I'm sure it wasn't planned. Right? 🐂💨💩. 🍿🍻🇺🇸

Watch the LIVE VOTE RETURNS.
IF THE LIVE VOTE COUNT TOTALS START GOING DOWN, YOU KNOW "FRACTION MAGIC" IS BEING USED !

DemocRATS will NEVER leave elections in the hands of the voters again, after Trump won !
