"It's a big deal": Melting ice sheets are accelerating sea level rise
CBS "News" ^ | February 13, 2018

Melting ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are speeding up the already fast pace of sea level rise, new satellite research shows. At the current rate, the world's oceans on average will be at least 2 feet - - 61 centimeters - - higher by the end of the century compared to today, according to researchers who published in Monday's Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.

The research, based on 25 years of satellite data, shows that pace has quickened, mainly from the melting of massive ice sheets. It confirms scientists' computer simulations and is in line with predictions from the United Nations, which releases regular climate change reports.

"It's a big deal" because the projected sea level rise is a conservative estimate and it is likely to be higher, said lead author Steve Nerem of the University of Colorado.

Global sea levels were stable for about 3,000 years until the 20th century when they rose and then accelerated due to global warming caused by the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, said climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute in Germany, who wasn't part of the study.

If thus is true, why does my hairline keep receding towards the back of my head? Hmmmm?

Manhattan was under ice about 15k years ago.

The ice has been melting (glaciers receding) since then and will continue to do so, until the ice starts advancing again.

There have been 60 such cycles (advance/recede) in the last 4 million years.

It is currently 49 degrees where I am; two hours ago, it was 47 degrees. At the current rate, it will be 83 degrees by tomorrow afternoon.

You must live in Texas. LOL

Was not there a recent story about the poor sinking island rising again, just last week?

I just spent the past week on Marco's Island (and another week to go!) - I've been coming here for years.

I walk out to the same beach I've been walking out on since 1989. I can attest that the sea level has not risen a single inch since then. Well maybe an inch - one way or the other. But had the sea level risen, I would definitely have noticed it.

By the way, this area was hit HARD by Hurricane Irma last September. Kudos to Marco's Island for rebuilding speedily. You wouldn't even know a hurricane hit here - except some of the roofs are still being redone. Seems there is a shortage of roof workers in the area and there is still a 4-6 week wait to have your roof redone.

Note to roofers in the North-lands - come on down!

Perfect weather too. It's been in the low to mid 80s every single day without even a drop of rain.

Hmmm...based on my experience, many many years ago, icy sheets never accelerated a rise...

Sea levels are rising fast, eh? Then explain The Broomway in England—a path that is covered deep enough at high tide to have killed hundreds over the last 5 centuries. Read about it here:

"Hundreds"?..."5 centuries"?

I guess those "hundreds" must have been smart enough to simply walk out of the way.

It would be nice if more people realized that politics is religion and that their news source has a political side.

A “Scientific Experiment” for FReepers to try:

1. Take a straight-sided glass and put some water in it. Represents the ocean.

2. Add two or three ice cubes. Represents the glaciers.

3. Record the depth of the water and ice. Represents sea depth before ice melting.

4. Have a beer while the ice cubes melt.

5. After ice has melted, record depth of water and melted ice.

Report any difference in the number from step 3 and the number from step 5 on this thread.

Now, about these glaciers melting and causing sea levels to rise...
