President Trump's newly proposed budget includes a proposal to end federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), part of a package that includes $300 billion in new spending overall.
CPB provides federal funding for PBS and National Public Radio stations.
"The Budget proposes to eliminate Federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) over a two year period," according to the proposal.
"CPB grants represent a small share of the total funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), which primarily rely on private donations to fund their operations," it continues.
"To conduct an orderly transition away from Federal funding, the Budget requests $15.5 million in 2019 and $15 million in 2020, which would include funding for personnel costs of $16.2 million, rental costs of $8.9 million; and other costs totaling $5.4 million."
In a statement in March 2017 after the first Trump budget proposed the elimination of CPB, the 50-year-old nonprofit characterized itself as one of Americas best investments.
We will work with the new administration and Congress in raising awareness that elimination of federal funding to CPB begins the collapse of the public media system itself and the end of the essential national service," CPB President Patricia Harrison said.
There is no viable substitute for federal funding that ensures Americans have universal access to public medias educational and informational programming and services," she added.
The elimination of federal funding to CPB would initially devastate and ultimately destroy public medias role in early childhood education, public safety, connecting citizens to our history, and promoting civil discussions all for Americans in both rural and urban communities.
Responding to Trump's budget, the CPB's head said the cuts would hurt emergency alert systems and childhood programming, among other things.
PBS CEO Paula Kerger said at a TV critics meeting last July that a number of PBS stations across the country are dependent on federal funding in order to survive.
"PBS will not go away, but a number of our stations will," Kerger said on July 30. "There is no Plan B for that."
Trump's budget requires congressional approval before it can take effect. Public broadcasting has survived previous presidential threats to cut its funding.
Defund them and sell to the highest bidder.
This is good. Why pay the people who use the money to show their hatred for you?
Excellent.
Yeah so, why wasn’t it included in the budget solution that just passed?
Who knew?

They’re called “underwriters”
I got some grief from a PBS mega-beggar about that.
Spring mega-begging when I was in public TV meant really good donated dinners.
The winter one was a rotating assortment of Hardees.
I’m sure they will have no trouble getting funding for m their current benefactors and the half dozen or so viewers with their telethons. The Pew Foundation, the Tides Foundation, and the Ford Foundation provide a lot of the funding now - a few dollars more form these impoverished ‘non-profits’ will keep them spewing for years to come.
Maybe we’ll see the last of the Saturday morning programs which “are brought to you commercial-free, by Kohler, who provdes modern sinks and accessories (queue the appropriate non-commercial pictures of sinks, here); et. al.”
Good idea! The pbs has been showing racist propaganda and very slanted communistic style news crap! (The better shows like most nova and nature and some music and such will always find channels and audiences without our tax money
In the PBS stations in our area, they play really good stuff during the fund raisers then they go back to really boring replays of stuff about how evil white people are. NOVAs good but we get that on Amazon Prime.
Yes!
HELL YES
It doesn't take much money to run a fusion-jazz radio station. DJs work for about nothing.
The PBS millions go to pay six and seven figure salaries for Tavis Smiley, Garrison Keillor, Bill Moyers and the rest of the lefty crew that would starve to death if they had to support themselves.
Many people in the business world will gladly purchase these properties.
And their copyrights, pattons, trademarks etc.

Please get rid of the Ad Council public service ads, too! Especially the ones voiced by children. How utterly grating!!!!! Arrrrgggghhhhhh!!!
MAGA!!!
I hate to see how much the next one borrows.
President Trump signed a $400 billion budget deal Friday morning that sharply hikes spending and balloons the federal deficit then bemoaned the funding bill that ended a brief federal shutdown.

I guess they getter start hustling to earn their money in the competitive market like everybody else does instead of writing government grant applications. Zeroing them out couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of propagandists.

Agree. Time to cut them loose. Leftist voice in media is not the minority.
