We all know that this years flu season is bad. I have been pouring over numbers and reports over the past few days, and its actually even worse than were hearing about. Tens of thousands of Americans are dying. Its now worse than the 2009 swine flu outbreak and is on track with the 2014-15 strain. And its not showing any signs of slowing down.
Despite this, the media is downplaying the severity of the flu and the government makes the statistics pretty difficult to find. Are they trying to avoid a panic? Do they know something we dont?
Heres what you need to know about why this years flu is so dangerous.
This Years Flu Strain Is More Deadly
The dominant Influenza strain this year is H3N2. This particular strain has a history of causing more hospitalizations and more deaths. According to the CDC:
In the past, H3N2-predominant seasons have been associated with more severe illness and higher mortality, especially in older people and young children, relative to H1N1- or B-predominant seasons. Between 1976 and 2007, for example, CDC estimates that an average of 28,909 people died from flu during H3N2 seasons, compared to 10,648 people during non-H3N2 predominant years.
Thats a difference of 18,261 adults each year. And thats in a good year.
In addition to H3N2 producing a more serious infection in general, this years particular H3N2 influenza virus is particularly virulent. The number of deaths due to influenza or complications to the flu, such as pneumonia (a secondary bacterial infection following influenza), varies from year to year.
An August 27, 2010 MMWR report entitled Thompson MG et al. Updated Estimates of Mortality Associated with Seasonal Influenza through the 2006-2007 Influenza Season. MMWR 2010; 59(33): 1057-1062., provided estimates of the range of flu-associated deaths

Thank you.
The flu virus constantly mutates. Each year the pharmaceutical companies make a vaccine for what they think is the next mutations. It is really a crap shoot. Sometimes they are right and as in this year they are wrong. That is just the way it is.

Ya, we’re glad we’re better too. The nurse couldn’t believe we’d swabbed positive for everything. ‘No wonder you feel bad!’.
We usually take d3 but ran out end of last summer & just kept forgetting to restock. We’re fully restocked for years now LOL.
You’re welcome.
We also take K2. There’s a vitamin K combo pill we get from vitacost. We keep those on reorder. The d3 we’d neglected to reorder and ran out several months ago. We won’t be doing that again!
Since we started doing the vitamin K we haven’t had any cavities.
Yeah, we’re all better now. I’m not afraid of getting out now that we’ve had everything *chuckle*
Looking more and more like the black sweet treat in the comfort station on Transverse Number One?
You’re welcome.
Like the previous poster noted, if you take the d3 regularly be sure to see about taking k2 with that. Ask your doc though, especially if you’re on anything that messes with blood clotting/INR.
The link I posted explains why that may not be enough for most people to maintain an adequate blood level.
Also see about taking vitamin K2 if you aren’t already taking it. Ask your doc though, just in case you’re on any meds that it would interfere with.
Jarrow is based in LA, CA, USA. I take Jarrow NAC, it’s great.
Yeah, ditto the colds and other stuff. We usually keep it on hand and take 10K IU/day during cold/flu season. Just ran out this year and forgot to reorder. We were probably doubly low because we had a cloudy rainy summer here this year.
This is my second weekend with this flu. The worse part is all the coughing. Just worn out from it all.
That’s them. I’d love to taste fresh Elderberries. Those look delicious.
But yeah, apparently very healthy for the sick.
Just used some for this crap I’ve had for three weeks. On the day I felt it going down into my lungs, I finally found some Sambucus tablets.
The next day after 3-4 doses, it was no longer festering in my lungs, and now I’m just about over it.
I had to take d3 longer than anyone else because of the coughing. I took 30K IU a day for a week or more. The ‘flu symptoms’ were over by the second day but the drainage had already gotten into my chest so it had to come out. I slept sitting up in a recliner and that really helped. YMMV. I ended up taking a decongestant and cough suppressant at night for a couple nights.
A few years ago when we had another flu epidemic, probably not as bad as this one. One of the Freepers suggested NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine) and I have been taking it ever since. About a small tsp of NAC and about 1 + 1/2 tsp of calcium ascorbate (C) and it has been working like a charm. There is plenty of info available about NAC and what it can do for you. And it is not just good for flu either, recommend very highly to read up on it, just Google for it.
I wouldn't give that advice in this case. If the patient were experiencing the onset of a cytokine storm the increased immune system activity could finish the person off.
It is believed that cytokine storms were responsible for the disproportionate number of healthy young adult deaths during the 1918 influenza pandemic, which killed 50 to 100 million people.[1] In this case, a healthy immune system may have been a liability rather than an asset.
I have some on order from Amazon, but it’s not due until Wednesday, and I really, really needed it before then, so I had to go on an extensive local search, which was successful.
We take the Jarrow extended release NAC but had gotten out of the habit during Christmas holidays. We love it too. Gives me energy & seems to have helped my blood sugar readings.
Thanks for that link of the Dr treatment with vitamin D, D3 and sharing your experience. I’m posting it around. That could help some people stay alive. Much appreciated.
You’re welcome.
See the previous posters info about taking K2 with the vitamin D3 if you take it for a while but also seeing what your doc says about taking K2.
As I said above, we haven’t had any cavities in 5 years at my house since we started with the K2.
