DOHA,— Qatar, which is routinely accused of ties to Islamist extremists and Islamic State group IS, has thrown its weight behind Turkey’s military offensive against Kurdish militia in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava), coming to the defence of the “national security” of one of its closest allies.

“The state of Qatar reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the republic of Turkey to maintain its national security in the wake of the breaches and terrorist attacks carried out inside Turkish territories,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Lolwa Al-Khater said.

Speaking to Qatari media on Monday, Khater said Turkey’s launch of Operation Olive Branch was “driven by legitimate concerns related to its national security and securing its borders, as well as protecting the territorial integrity of Syria from the danger of secession”.

OK? Another piece of the puzzle.

Qatar's logic is as twisted as Erdogan the Islamist. Of course they both support Islamic Terrorists. And Qatar has deep pockets, Turkey's pockets have seen better days.

Qatar was one of the BIG supporters of the overtly Islamist militia groups fighting Assad as part of the so-called “Syrian opposition”. Their support for Erdogan vis a vis the Kurds now is no surprise at all.

Shifting alliances.
Revived Ottoman Empire encircling Saudi Arabia.
No matter where the US stands in the ME, there will be enemies all around.

When they host the World Cup, will they force their citizens to fill in all of the empty seats?

Guess we will see, but I doubt it. Trump is scheduled to talk directly to Erdogan today from what I read this morning.

Who knows.

I’m the most illiterate person living when it comes to sports. Did not know Qatar was hosting anything.

Agree. I’m not surprised, but surprised to see it talked about.

Of course Qatar backs Turkey.

The Qatar-Turkey natural gas pipeline is what’s important to them - and what has caused the destabilization of Syria, influx of African refugees into Europe, and anger or Russia (who currently supplies most of the natural gas to European countries).

Qatar backs Turkey’s military action against Syrian Kurds

Of course they do, Qatar is a prime mover in the Qatari Nat Gas pipeline through Syria and Turkey to Western Europe.

They still hold out hope they can get that done through Terrorist action.

Another piece of the puzzle.

There is no puzzle.

American alliances with Turkey and Qatar (correctly) outweigh support for the Kurds in Syria.

US intervention in Syria is a losing proposition that damages these important strategic alliances.

Get the US out of Syria!
