Lukasz Niec was 5 years old when his parents brought him and his sister to the United States from Poland. With two suitcases in tow, his parents — both doctors — left behind a country on the verge of social turmoil. It was 1979, about two years before the country’s authoritarian communist government declared martial law.
Niec received a temporary green card and, in 1989, became a lawful permanent resident. He grew up in Michigan, went to medical school, became a doctor, and raised a daughter and stepdaughter.
But on Tuesday morning, immigration authorities arrested Niec at his home, just after he had sent his 12-year-old stepdaughter off to school. Niec, a physician specializing in internal medicine at Bronson Healthcare Group in Kalamazoo, Mich., has been detained in a county jail ever since, awaiting a bond hearing and possible deportation.

He has escaped the dui and domestic violence he was charged with but not an earlier arrest while 17 for something else....
He has a clear history of issues, and believe me, he is a liberal all the way in Kalamazoo.
Good riddance. Most Michiganders on the local news threads are glad to see him go.
There are limits to it - look it up. It's not the same as being a US citizen.

He became a lawful permanent resident. It's not like he has been skirting the law all these years. He did it fair and square. Unlike the many imams hitching rides on FedEx cargo jets.

With that being said, Green Cards expire either annually or every five years, not sure which, and if not renewed, you are now in this country illegally!
This dumbass had every opportunity to continue to renew his card but chose not to. So after 40 years, he was finally busted. I have no sympathy for this guy........
FWIW, my two step-sisters were green card holders for decades until they became naturalized. One of them is married to a Honduran who was here legally for decades until he became naturalized. The other one chooses to remain a Canadian citizen even tho she is married to an American and has to renew her card according to regulations.
Hmm... My guess is that an ex-wife / girlfriend (note how the article refers to “current wife”) is still sore about the non-conviction of the good doctor on domestic violence charges back in 2013, and tipped off ICE to the older legal infractions. Lacking any more to go on, I accept the jury verdict that he really wasn’t guilty of DV, and who knows, the DUI might have been the ex driving him to drink. But, revenge - yeah - “Hell has no fury...” as the saying goes.
I do not think that the Federal Agency exists that does not sometimes act in an overly heavy-handed way.
It seems to me that, ok, arrest the guy, slap on $1000 bail and a monitor, let him make bail and go back to work imediately, let the process work out & make a determination, with ability to appeal.

According to the article, his green card was renewed. Some, such as for a spouse, go for 10 years at a time.
He knew that he was only here on a green card. He had plenty of time to engage in the process to become a citizen. He used all that time to make a good life for himself. One would think that he would have enough gratitude to become a citizen of the country that gave him the opportunity to be successful.
This is the demonrats weaponizing the deportation of aliens.
It is not easy or cheap to go through the process legally. Nor should it be, but sometimes the “bureaucracy” is, as one might expect of FedGov, pretty overdone.
One of those I know of is also Canadian. No gratitude to this country. He’s a POS but at least he pays his taxes here and keeps out of trouble.

You’re right about overreach. Still, the reason he was detained is not the mystery the article tried to portray it as.
Also, DUI is a violent crime. It should be grounds for immediate deportation. I don’t understand why Mothers Against Drunk Driving isn’t speaking out on this.
40 years is plenty long enough to have become a US citizen.

Well... If an immigrant, about the only things one gains from citizenship in the US are the right to vote, and freedom from deportation. Immigrants tend toward being Dems (although that is certainly not true of all!), so persuading them to remain green card holders is not all bad. Plus, some want to retire to their birth countries after their working years, and, that is not all bad either. Heck, finances alone have me wondering if I, a born in the US citizen, should head overseas once I’m no longer able to work effectively. Otherwise, I see no scenario where I do not have to work until I drop dead.
