Improvised explosive device detonated near JC Penney at Lake Wales mall [FL USA]

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Lake Wales police are searching for those responsible for detonating an improvised explosive device near the entrance of the JC Penney at the Eagle Ridge Mall Sunday evening.
Firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at the mall on 451 Eagle Ridge Drive around 5:20 p.m.
Firefighters quickly determined an IED had been detonated in a corridor located next to the mall entrance of JC Penney, officials said.
Firefighters also found a backpack in the same corridor with another possible IED inside.
There were no injuries as a result of the explosion, officials said, but the mall has been evacuated.

I’ve actually been in that mall before while visiting my folks down south. I’m surprised the JC Penney’s is even still open. A pipe bomb going off might have been the most exciting thing to happen there in a whole year.
Most of the stores are boarded up and closed.

I used to date a woman from Lake Wales, planting a bomb at that mall doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s a small mall, sort of out in the middle of nowhere. Why hit Lake Wales when you have Orlando 45 mins away and Tampa a hour away? Unless someone why trying to send a message to Sheriff Judd. Even hitting a target in Lakeland makes more sense. Wierd.
