Germany's SPD in all-or-nothing vote on Merkel alliance
TheLocal.de ^

Germany's divided Social Democrats will hold a crunch vote on Sunday on whether to pursue a coalition deal with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives, or plunge the nation into political turmoil.

At an extraordinary congress in the western city of Bonn, 600 delegates from the centre-left SPD and its 45-member board will have their say on entering into formal talks for a renewed alliance with Merkel's centre-right CDU/CSU bloc.

The stakes could scarcely be higher for Merkel as a "no" vote would leave her with the option of leading an unstable minority government -- a prospect she has baulked at -- or face snap polls. **** a defeat would "very quickly" trigger new elections in which voters would be likely to "punish" the conservatives but also the SPD.

Interesting. The SPD is to the left of Merkel, and Merkel hates Germany and Germans with a passion.

Germany need a new face besides Angel Merkel. She was cute when President Bush was touching her (inappropriately or not). She is well past her sell by date.

...hold a crunch vote...

I'm all in for the original recipe.

Crunchberries are a lie.

One option I have never seen is a coalition government with AfD. But I think Merkel would rather chew off her own leg.

a defeat would "very quickly" trigger new elections in which voters would be likely to "punish" the conservatives but also the SPD.

We can dream, can't we. Maybe the CDU could serve as AfD's junior partner.

AfD is not ready to take power, and a coalition with CDU (which is impossible anyway) would not serve Europa’s interests at all.

I don’t know but Germany seem to be facing challenges that cannot be resolved by the current government. I suggest the current government fall. They have sat there too long for any good that they may have done or will ever do.

The Merkel gov‘t have -

1) balanced the budget such that there is too big of surplus
2) reformed the labor market such that their is a labor shortage
3) encouraged manufacturing leading to a export boom

The middle class is prosperous & gets 6 weeks paid vacations. Crime is non-existent. Education is top notch. Corruption is nil.

Yup - 12 years of Merkel had ruined Germany

And I protest against our American government which has no way to fall from no confidence unless the President commit a High Crime or misdemeanor.

Not that I protest against President Trump. Just about our locked in system. I’d prefer to avoid another Obama in our future.

OK, so Germany NEED those laborers in the field to harvest the crops? One million a year? Are they doing the job?

I get what you are saying. Nevertheless, from this side of the pond, it appears that Europe is being invaded by people who have at best a “screw you” attitude toward Europeans, at worst active terrorist intentions. Young German girls get fingered and raped. Is this like a trade off for stable economics? MY earnings haven’t been stable, They’ve cratered. No sympathy. Me thinks Germand are still calling a fat brown turd a golden egg.

And moreover.. If I were to rape a girl in Germany, America, or anywhere else I would have my life DESTROYED or spend the rest of my life in prison, but if a brown skin “rapefugee” rape a girl the police don’t even investigate. This will have repercussions.

I don’t mean to sound bitter. The US government turns a similar deaf ear to the citizens in favor of offering a never ending olive branch to the illegals. We used to be a universal trust fund with the hope to help all struggling civilized groups. That’s all over now. Our trust fund is gone and we have to go back to basic principles.

You make valid points but immigration, defence and foreign policy is another story.

Germany died after WWII. The men were eviscerated from two world wars. They need immigration or the economy will perish; they are not breeding. Social insanity does not help.

The point is they could get immigrants from eastern Europe but opted for Middle East and Africa instead.

They did get migrants and immigrants from eastern Europe in the mix (Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova, and even Russians). The majority of this worked out well....but then you had the various eastern European mafia groups/clans that moved in and triggered most of the escalation of crime.

Car theft gangs came out of the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. Break-in crime became a big deal via the Romanian crime groups.

When you go and talk about the escalation of drug sales, it centers on some mafia groups from Czech and Serbia as the ‘head’ and a lot of migrants from Tunisia, Morocco, etc...who are the street sales folks.

It is absolutely true that the spiraling population trend is a problem. I’ve seen several analysis reports which project by 2030, the population will have shrunk from the 82-million range down to around 70-million. And it will continue to slide as the decades continue on. One university group even went to study migration over the past forty years with various nationalities, then came to discover that they all became ‘Germanized’ with the first generation of migrants, and the next generation went to the zero, one or two child routine that the Germans are addicted to. Part of the problem is the cost of living, combined with taxation....you can’t afford to have three or more kids.

The SPD was part of Merkel’s previous coalition government. They are balking at joining this time.

Romania is a part of EU and as for a post-Soviet immigrants these are mostly ethnic Germans who have chosen to repatriate due to economic conditions. Don’t tell the Romanians and Soviet Germans are more criminal than the Middle Easterners or Turks.

The wave of refugees was a one time event and represented a minuscule percentage of the overall population. Merkel‘s gov‘t has processed this wave and quietly deported about 1/2 of them.

Since Germany has a labor shortage in its factories, the refugees who are being allowed to stay will be employed and pay taxes. It’s calculated that the refugees are adding about 1% to GDP growth already.

BTW - a majority of the refugees were Christians
