Until now, most people thought you caught the flu after being exposed to droplets from an infected persons coughs or sneezes, or by touching contaminated surfaces.
But a study released Thursday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that we may pass the flu to others just by breathing.
The study which included researchers who are now working at San Jose State University and UC Berkeley offers new evidence on the importance of the flus airborne qualities and how it can easily be transmitted to others. Researchers found large quantities of infectious viruses in the breath exhaled by those suffering from the flu.
The study findings suggest that keeping surfaces clean, washing our hands all the time, and avoiding people who are coughing does not provide complete protection from getting the flu, Sheryl Ehrman, who is now dean of the College of Engineering at San Jose State University, said in a statement. Staying home and out of public spaces could make a difference in the spread of the influenza virus.
Ehrman said the study was launched at the University of Maryland during the flu season of December 2012 through March 2013. Researchers including Jovan Pantelic, who now works at UC Berkeley, recruited 178 volunteers, mostly students, who had shown flu symptoms within three days of the flus onset.
Over those four months, researchers captured and characterized the flu virus in 142 of the volunteers with confirmed cases of the flu while they breathed naturally, talked, coughed or sneezed.
The researchers then assessed the severity of naturally occurring flu aerosols tiny droplets that stay suspended in the air for a long time.

You come into contact with diseases all the time.
Duh.
Just like globull warming!
If all the liberals would just stop breathing, it could really reduce the spread of flu and other illnesses. Just an idea....
My god, I hope government funds weren’t used for that study.
All flues are spread by ‘breathing’. Doh!
Also, being born can lead to death.
I was in the local pharmacy of the biggest HMO in the US to pickup an rx that is not mailed.
Many of the other patients waiting for rxes were wearing masks. The masks had been handed out by the RNs in the FP and IM clinics. The patients were told by the RNs to wear the masks until they got home.
In the pharmacy waiting room, one woman threw her mask on the floor and started coughing.
An RN, who looked like she was a middle linebacker, had a patient (maybe her mother in a wheelchair) told the patient to pick up her mask and put it back on while she was in the waiting area. The mask remover gave the RN the middle finger salute.
For a moment, I thought the RN was going to kick a field goal with the mask less one being the football.
Pharmacy people were out there quickly and so were security people. When they heard what the unmasked one had done, they told her to leave and they would bring her rx out to the parking kiosk.
She left and her rx was taken out to the kiosk by a tech.
Funny, isn’t it? Another “we’re all gonna die!!” scenario.

Probably was government funds.
Which explains why it took FIVE YEARS to release the results to the public.
It's a wonder the government didn't completely kill this important story.
They hate anything that reveals the true risks we encounter, as opposed to the fake globull warming hysteria they love.

Gotta be fake news. Everybody knows the flu is spread by the flu vaccine

We are not yet at the height of the influenza infection season.
