I’m retired in New Mexico. 24 years military and 20+ years as Def Contractor. Been here 25 years and like it just fine. High crime rate in Albuquerque but we live in the stix.
Ping...follow up to your recent request for info on places to retire.
I have heard the area around the ‘Four Corners’ is a great place to be if you have an income.
Kinda all depends on where you live in the state and what your position in life is.
All the border states were better before they gave illegals more rights than Americans.
All=l border States are spiraling out of control now
When locals first met me and saw that I was a visitor they were very friendly and welcoming.
As soon as I mentioned that I might be moving there, they clammed up and scowled at me.
Now that NM has already been Californicated, I wonder if they are any more or less welcoming to immigrants.
In Hatch Chiles.. yeah..
New Mexico is 62% non-white.
Albuquerque = property crime. They really need to get a grip on it, totally out of control.
Sovereign Reservations do that to a place.
They cut BP and Local authorities out.
Lawlessness follows, drug running, human trafficking..
New Mexico Taxes

Retirement Income Exemptions: There is a modest reduction
in taxes for people 65 or over with incomes less than $55,000 (couples). Military pensions might be eligible under this exemption.
Social security exemption: NM is one of the few states that taxes social security payments, although the exemption discussed above might apply.
Sales Tax: State sales tax is called the Gross Receipts Tax : it is 5.125%, though higher in many municipalities, so the statewide average after surcharges is 7.35%.

Mmmm no. Dont like TexMex....and New Mexico is pretty close to it. I like real Mexican Food. It abounds in California.
What I love about New Mexico is you can get green chile on anything and everything.
I go through there about four times a year or more. This year I am doing a five day visit for the Santa Fe Opera. In the fall is the ballon festival north of Albuquerque, the artists shops in old town are great and Bandolier NM is an oasis on a hot summer day.
Lots of great little towns. ( I love Soccoro) and the Very Large Array.
I still Jones for Baja food.
Don’t miss the rest of it.
Used to be able to sleep on the Beaches in Mexico in 1996 Safely..
