The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.
I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.
I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.
Any ideas?
Welcome to Arizona.
No earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, phenomenally oppressive humidity, snowdrifts up to your eyeballs.
Every amenity on earth.
Substantially R state.
I currently live on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland, but I am hoping to move to East Berlin, Pennsylvania when I retire in four (count ‘em...four...long) years. My family lives there and it is gorgeous, quaint, quiet and lovely. Not too far from Gettysburg.
Not for long...that's where the growth is headed: to Denton, and Fort Worth.
My kids are in the Coppell ISD. 20 years ago, it was a town of 20,000. Now it's 40,000+ and builders are putting McMansions wherever there's a lot of 6-8000 feet.
I find that’s true. I live near Princeton, NJ and they are insufferable. They try to outdo NYers in liberalism. In NYC, your pals will talk to you, in private, about how much they hate the homeless population, inner city crime and DeBlasio. Princetonians doing that? Nah. Big fishes in small ponds!
I believe that one of The Laws of Thermodynamics says you have to be somewhere, so pick a spot or the Thermodynamic Police will come round you up.
A child I raised went to school at Washington College.
Thats where I live!!!
My Tampa nephew calls that L.A. As in Lower Alabama ;-)
Did you know that every McDonalds east of the Mississippi serves eggs from Michigan? Every Lays potato chip began here as well. We grow food and it grows madly. Then people give it away all over the place.
This is not in southern WY, but Buffalo, WY is a very nice little town.
There is also a very small town that I went to specifically, in WY, called Ten Sleep. Absolutely gorgeous scenery there and leading to it. Also in the northern part of the state.
Casper seems like a pretty nice town. I went to one of the best museums ever in Casper. And Cheyenne just over the CO border isn’t bad. Still has a lot of the old west, retro feel.
I totally love Colorado’s weather as we get nice days even in the Fall and Winter, but the front range, specifically the Denver metro, is exploding as far as population.
Still, there are some very nice towns of varyimg sizes throughout the state. Rifle. Fruita. Glenwood Springs. Carbondale. Those are all on the Western slope. Beautiful, beautiful area out there. But there are some little towns on the plains and down south that I have really liked, too. Elizabeth isn’t super far from the Demver metro (about an hour), but very rural. I can’t remember who, but one FReeper memtioned they live in Elizabeth. I love the drive out there when I go to pick up my son from his friend’s house.
You can look up about various places on City Data if you haven’t already come across it.
Also Google:
The ten best small towns to live in “state of your choice”.
Good luck to you.
laplata: Any ideas for CO or WY. Would you recommend Durango?
I was raised in El Paso -— so it doesn’t seem hot here to me at all.
But for a more objective perspective:

Yes, we usually get a few days of freezing weather every winter, and a few 100 degree days every summer. The rest of the time it’s just perfect.
Do I seem a little biased???
“Why does Kentucky get a bad rap”
It’s the toothless, inbred hicks narrative pushed by the coastal elites. I suppose getting away from these elites is why you’re leaving the northeast.
It has already snowed here-a few inches in December, then a few flurries a couple weeks ago-and snow/frozen mix predicted tomorrow, low in the mid 20’s tomorrow night-but no shoveling snow-a good thing.
Being Hispanic/Latino, I was taught at home as a child to speak Spanish as a 2nd language-but most people out here do, no matter their ethnicity because tourists from Northern Mexico come up here, buy stuff and rent cabins year round-it is a huge part of the economy, along with the Snowbirds from up North and Canada.
This area is pretty evenly divided Anglo/Latino, mostly mixed, dark and light, hair and eyes of all colors, and all Caucasians-only surnames are any indicators of ethnicity. The Black families around here are not ethnic Latinos-but most are native Texans.
We’ve been looking around Bucks County. Yes, I know it is all lib but the property taxes are much lower than where we are and it is not far from NYC. I also love western Maryland.
(I’m probably just going to rent in NYC full time when our house sells. I’m looking to avoid property taxes.)
It’s not true.
The rest of the process is a piece of cake...Just list your "good" criteria and choose...Or buy a motor-home and travel...
Poland.
Far Upstate South Carolina, right up against the NC line. Beautiful, mountainous, fairly mild four season climate, conservative, not too expensive, red state. Greenville is a growning city that is not too far away for city conveniences but far enough that you’re not in it or even suburban to it. More like far exurbs. I’m thinking Oconee County myself, but there are others similarly situated.
Chestertown is about 20 minutes from me. Lovely, old, and rich with history. Unfortunately, not as safe as it used to be.
Auburn-Opelika, Alabama!
