WASHINGTON It was just after President Trump had finished railing in the Oval Office against African immigrants he said came from shithole countries when a senior Republican senator, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who was there to negotiate a deal on immigration, spoke up.
America is an idea, not a race, Mr. Graham said, according to three people familiar with the exchange on Thursday. Diversity was a strength, he said, not a weakness. And by the way, the senator added, he himself was a descendant of immigrants who came to the United States from shithole countries with no skills.
Mr. Trumps racially charged comments in front of more than half a dozen lawmakers, which also extended to immigrants from Haiti followed by a day in which members of Congress denounced the president, defended him or stayed silent now threaten what had been an emerging agreement to protect undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.
Several people with knowledge of the conversation said the president had also demanded to know whether Haitian immigrants could be left out of any deal. The White House has not disputed the account of the exchange.

Is he saying that countries are shttholes due to skin color?
Graham has betrayed the idea that is America time and time again. He seeks amnesty even though America was created as a nation of citizens with unalienable rights, not a nation of foreigners with more rights than its citizens.
I’m gonna self-censor on this one.
Maybe the idea needs to be defended by making sure we welcome only those who don’t have different ideas?
Like imposing Sharia for one? Or those who are socialist like Obama’s thankfully never naturalized dad?
Ahem......
Graham: Illegal immigrants come to U.S. from “hellholes”

Did the little faggot think we’d forgotten?
Gee Linda,it’s a real shame that your ancestors were allowed into this country and by the by...you’re not only an imbecile, but prove, every single day, that insane as well.
Well, that’s good, cause if Miss Linda had to run in a race, she’d probably get the vapors.
An idea based on personal responsibility, not government handouts for votes. But Linda is far too dense, with a life sucking on the government teat, to ever figure that out.
Linda is a shithole Republican.
So this Twitter engineer is ready to change Trumps tweets and turn them over to the DOJ???
I suggest the best thing the right can do is to let the left wallow in such thoughts without getting polluted itself.
Then it will have the moral authority to ask the left why it has managed to engage in such narrow minded belittlement. And beat it on its own vaunted turf.
no one would ever say China is an idea. Is Israel an idea? Africa? Latin America? No, only Europe and America are ideas.
Make that a "hellhole" Republican.
Gee someone needs to remind Graham of the words HE used in 2013 that got him into trouble..cough cough Mexico is a hellhole
America is a sovereign nation with a Constitution you're sworn to defend, Linda, and since you won't do your job, President Trump will.
The ny slimes is a shithole of a news paper )
Graham seems more idiotic by the day. McCain’s condition must be a great distraction for, uh...him.
“Is he saying that countries are shttholes due to skin color?”
Can I say the Nets are a shitty team? Is that a racist statement just because the majority of the team is black? Of course not. It’s because they fail to win.
Countries are not shitty because of race, ethnicity etc. They are shitty generally because of shitty (often greedy) leadership and failure to properly provide for their people.
America is an idea that came out of the Christian faith and culture.
There , fixed.
Muslims and Africans never did what the Christians of Great Britain did which is what brought civility to the world. It happened by exclusion, not inclusion.
Never. Trust. Lindsey. Graham.
Never. That scorpion will never change his rainbow colors.
