'Thanks, but no thanks' - Norwegians reject Trump's immigration offer

OSLO - Many Norwegians rejected on Friday a suggestion by U.S. President Donald Trump that they would be more welcome to move to the United States than immigrants from “shithole countries” such as Haiti or African nations.

The Nordic country, one of the richest in the world by GDP per capita, was last year named the happiest nation on the planet and is known for a cradle-to-grave welfare state funded in part by large reserves of oil and natural gas.

“On behalf of Norway: Thanks, but no thanks,” tweeted Torbjoern Saetre, a politician representing Norway’s Conservative Party in a municipality near Oslo.

Others condemned the U.S. president’s comments as inappropriate or racist.

“We are not coming. Cheers from Norway,” one woman wrote.

While hundreds of thousands of Norwegians emigrated to the U.S. in the 19th century, just 502 out of a population of 5.3 million people moved there in 2016, down 59 from the previous year, according to Statistics Norway.

Sage advice!

>>We should be mostly publishing the truth on FR, not the lies, and as much good news as possible to bolster morale. <<

>>The key is the headline and the first few sentences because not everyone has time to drill down. The endless stream of negative, lying headlines sabotages our purpose<<

Well, it’ time to shut down NATO and let Europe pay for its own defense. US taxpayers have shouldered enough of the world’s burdens.

I’m just arguing the point that even if he DID use that phrase, so what?

Has anyone seen the movie, “Blackhawk Down”? Or any movie (or news broadcast) featuring scenes in Haiti. “S***hole” is the first word that comes to mind, regarding various facets of the lifestyles and politics.

i.e. I wish he HAD said it. He’s not a politician. He’s a straight talker. That’s one of his charms.

The profusion of the S-word on FR lately (even before the latest fake news, it's been the new fad word around here) strikes me as odd. Here I'm now seeing the same defensive arguments that "progressive" people have used for years. If you objected to a gratuitous F-bomb in a movie, for example, you were derided as some old-fashioned fuddy-duddy who didn't appreciate how Real People talk.

I also remember that the "Straight Talk Express" was John McCain's campaign bus. :O

Around 4000 Norwegians have participated in Green Card Lottery program every year in recent years, so plenty would like to come, but they won’t go too far out of their way to attempt it.

My own opinion is that most politicians talk like sailors until the cameras are rolling. And having been around people like Trump (rich and successful business men) his talk doesn’t surprise me.

I like to say that our new governor in KY is our local Trump, but with more articulate language. I think that is for two reasons: He’s a Christian and he has his whole career ahead of him. Trump sort of has a “let the chips fall where they may, ‘cause I don’t care if I’m re-elected or not and SOMEBODY needs to fix this stuff, regardless of the political fallout.” attitude.

It’s one of the reasons I see him as our Churchill. He is crass, but gets the job done. And when the job’s done, he’ll be out. i.e. he seems to be the man for our time and problem(s). No “real” politician could have touched most of this stuff.

And this speaks to the real problem: The voters.

I'm not surprised per se, but I've noticed how our standards for public language are eroding.

Here I'm thinking not so much about what Dick Durbin alleges was said in a more private meeting but about how, for example, literally mainstream media sources use the whole spelled-out word in ways that wouldn't have happened not that long ago. (It happened first, in my experience, with certain big UK newspapers; after all, Europe Is More Sophisticated.)

I've started hearing the F-word regularly used with small children present--and I've heard reports like that from people in parts of the country that are generally more conservative than mine.

You're not necessarily saying that the President isn't a Christian (though he professes to be one), but that's how I first read that line.

I'm reminded that the Religion Moderator here doesn't even allow words like "crap": "Any Religion Forum post which contains potty language - or references to potty language - will be pulled as soon as I see it. If you are new to the Religion Forum and wonder where your post went, it may well be that you used a word like 'crap' or 'BS'. "

I did not know I was in a particular forum.

And I’m not arguing that Trump is or is not a Christian. I judge a tree by its fruit. However, I did say that he has never done anything he needs to repent from, nor has he asked God for forgiveness. So take that for what it’s worth.

My belief is you can never “know” someone is a Christian. You can only “know” they aren’t, because they say they aren’t.

No, this thread isn't in the Religion Forum. I'm also not saying that particular rules of the Religion Forum apply (or should apply) elsewhere. I do notice the presence of that rule over there, though, and think a bit about what the rule reflects.

More later about the rest of your post.

I find it fascinating that the word, “crap” is offensive to some people. I find it comical that you can talk about hell, but when you say something like, “what the hell”, the context suddenly makes the word “bad”.

I think it is thee spirit behind the use of the word that matters. So, is it worse to say damn than darn, or f**kin’ instead of frickin’? Or “rats” instead of “sh**”. The whole thing is a fascinating issue to me and I put it in this context:

IN the fifties, it was common to light up a cigarette at the dinner table, but no-one would EVER consider it appropriate to say the f word. And today, it’s common to hear the f word at the dinner table, but no-one would ever consider lighting up a cigarette.

i.e. it’s all cultural norms, which ebb and flow.

I find offense over the word "crap" possibly also fascinating, though I wouldn't mean the word "fascinating" in any way that meant "confusing" or "incredible." My fascination is about what cultural norms allow, though without reaching anything like pure cultural relativism.

I also agree about the larger context of language, but that agreement is why I can see a reason behind the different treatments of uses of the word "hell." I also don't find those differences comical at all.

Maybe I should ask sometime, but I always assumed that the difference lies in context. Hell and damnation are what some people call "serious business," Using a phrase like to "damn you to hell" literally and seriously is spiritually dangerous, and using it lightly is hardly better (in part because using it lightly is trifling with danger). In other words, think of something like "taking the Lord's name in vain" (yes, context matters!) and extending that principle.

I'll post even more later, and if what I want to happen does happen, we'll even return to the subject of those Norwegians.

Because of my views on the afterlife (I’m CI), I equate the word “hell” to “death” or “hades”.

And I believe taking the Lord’s name in vain is when people do things like put the little fish on their business cards. i.e. “do business with me because I’m a Christian” i.e. using the Lord’s name for financial gain.
