Agree with the choices on the classics and the new stuff both.
I was watching The Green Berets and the first mortar coming in gave me a cold rush down my spine. I couldn’t stay and watch the rest with the family.
I have noticed that in other war movies, certain of the sounds make me very uncomfortable. I really only seem to enjoy comedies and musicals anymore.
“Taking Chance” is my favorite. Absolutely must-see movie.
Maybe not a war movie, but the last good movie I saw was “Patriots day” about the Boston marathon bombing. What surprised me was how close to the facts they stuck and didn’t make the terrorists out to be innocent victims like the left usually does. It was really good, really showed them to be the scmbags they are/were.
Halls of Montezuma was an awesome 50’s flick!
Crimson Tide is the number one movie on top of my husbands (27 yrs a submariner) worst movie list.
Its hard to watch anything with submarines as part of the plot line when my Husband is around. But Crimson Tide really got it all so terribly wrong, it appears as if they didnt bother having a military advisor onset to help them get anything right.
His favorites, however, was U-571 and Hunt for Red October. They were really good entertainment.
Band of Brothers is one of the best.
Our high school FB coach served in ‘Nam. During thunderstorms he would sleep outisde as a result of memories from ‘Nam.
One of the best war movies ever was “Breaker Morant” from the 1970s. It’s an historical account of 3 Brits being tried for war crimes in the Boer war in South Africa. Must see.
From what I have seen of pictures, film clips, and stories, the 1930 movie All Quiet on the Western Front was very realistic. The Saving Private Ryan of its day.
While not a VNam war movie, one of my favorites is “Tears of the Sun”. A brutal depiction of the atrocities of a Central African nation against its own people. Bruce Willis leads a Seal Team to get some people out.
Early Vietnam movie, “Go Tell the Spartans”, when we had advisors there before the $#!t hit the fan. Its like a forgotten movie with Burt Lancaster. Many good WW II black and white movies, staring the great arch villain Richard Loo, who we all loved to hate as kids.
My Uncle, a Korean War Vet loved Mel Gibson’s HACKSAW RIDGE.
Anyone who puts “Apocalypse Now” as a best war film knows nothing.
Dang you. You led me down a path that has consumed more than an hour and a half reading Medal of Honor Recipient Citations and watching interviews from the Youtube book Medal of Honor Book.
Every one of them explains in their own way that they and their soldiers did what they did out of Love for one another. They also recognize that not everyone will do what has to be done but they just won’t say a single bad thing about anyone. They exhibit pit for those who are not part of their society but never in a haughty way.
The steadfast humility and rock solid reliability exhibited by each of these recipients justifies the designation Medal of Honor. They knew what they were doing when the did it and took the actions without reservation or regard for personal safety.
Oh my.
To Hell and Back with Audie Murphy
All good flicks. Three that haven’t been mentioned but are among my favorites are:
Glory
Tora, Tora, Tora
Cross of Iron
I recently read Leckie's book...called "Helmet for my Pillow"...a great book...and a very fine writer. Who was a Marine in the Pacific Theater....
And was played by and actor...in the series..."The Pacific"....which I've not seen it all...but from what I have seen...it's very good.
Hmm... No Kelly’s Heroes???
