Another cultural icon bites the dust. We typically picture the movers and shakers in Silicon Valley as brilliant if geeky walking intellects hunched over their computers inventing new gadgets.
But this week Vanity Fair published a book excerpt [1] by Emily Chang revealing that Silicon Valley is as sexually debauched as Hollywood, politics, and the media. The titans of the tech worldentrepreneurs, executives, investors, founders of companiesregularly host drug-fueled, sex-laced parties.
Women in the tech industry often feel compelled to attend to get ahead in their careers. But the reality is that joining the party often stalls their careers, as they are reduced to sex objects instead of respected as whole persons. Progress? More like regress.
Changs book fuels the post-Weinstein wave of outrage. Yet merely exposing scandals may not produce a revolution or a reckoning or a sea change in attitudes, warns Jim Glassman, a journalist and former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, in another Vanity Fair piece [2].
For real reform, we have to dig deeper. A hedonistic ethic pervades all our public institutions. Universities hold sex weeks where porn stars are speakers and sex toy companies display their wares. Students attend workshops with titles like How to Have a Successful Threesome and How Many Licks Does It Take? (on oral sex). The message is: Dont be boring. Be like porn stars.

“I may be a prude, but in my 30 years in the software industry in Seattle, I never saw any of this.”
I went to a tech convention in Las Vegas about 20 years ago. MCI rented Liberace’s mansion and stocked it with all the food and booze you could consume, and most of the high-end whores in Vegas.
Easily 200 of them.
The old MCI knew how to buy business. And it worked very well for them.
Find any bastion of liberal dominance and you will find misogyny, drugs, pedophilia, racism and debauchery.
i am shocked, shocked that sex occurs in silicone alley.
omg omg omg lol
(full disclosure: i was a nerd in high school)
Microsoft isn't really part of Silicon Valley, being headquartered in Washington and all that.
So that settles it. The article is about management, not the actual engineers. Power, money, corruption, debauched revelry. That’s the corporate IT management I know.
I heard that this nonsense was coming to SV to use as a hammer to put more women and minorities in as CEO’s.
I asked the person who told me...”Have you ever been to Silicon Valley?”
Of course she said “No”
SV is probably the hardest, most expensive, most difficult place to work on the planet.
Available men to women ratio is probably close to 20-1
If you are a woman and want to marry a rich guy, this is the place to be.
If you are a single guy expecting to find love, good luck to that.
All you are going to find is a very expensive divorce and being forced to sell your very expensive home.
There are exception of course but they are very rare.
You are NOT a prude.
I was in Silicon Valley for 25 years and only saw it once among 8 people in a party of 50.
and not paid overtime for it! CA state law says no OT for software engineers.
LMAO!!
Stupid article that insinuates that programmers and engineers live like 80’s heavy metal singers. I’m pretty sure that this crap happens every night somewhere up the road in SF or Berkely, by the same types of messed up folks that have been living like that since the 60’s... But definitely not in Silicon Valley, and definitely not by engineers and programmers.
More bs from Vanity Fair. Clearly one of the shoddiest magazines in existence.
“Women in the tech industry often feel compelled to attend to get ahead in their careers. But the reality is that joining the party often stalls their careers, as they are reduced to sex objects instead of respected as whole persons. Progress? More like regress.”
What gives? I thought all this sort of thing got left behind after the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s. You’ve come a long way, baby, right back to where you were in 1970.
Hey to disappoint....this aint news
Shocking to think that the people who thought up and sponsor Burning Man would be into drugs and sex in a big way, isn’t it?
I had to read that twice. My brain automatically replaced the 'l' in 'walking' with another consonant.
The land of 24 hour service and stuff.. Wow.. Whoda thunk, the circle is unbroken.. I remember some parties long ago,, vaguely and thru a fog.. I don’t think I can keep up anymore with some of the transplants tho... Doc might not approve.. and wifey.
U know there will be NO kitchen passes.
