The cold blast hitting the U.S. is exposing the absurdity of left-wing energy policies in New England. Natural gas prices are skyrocketing in the region as the gas demand for both heating and electricity exceeds supply.
ISO New England issued a cold weather watch for January 5 to alert the wholesale power market to a surge in demand for the weekend, as temperatures are expected to plummet. The grid operator believes it has enough power, but the demand could exceed supply.
Dont blame the weather for soaring energy prices and possible electricity shortages; blame the left-wing politicians and radical environmentalists for engineering a system certain to fail. Instead of promoting an energy policy focused on reliability with a diverse array of power sources for electricity generation, New England adopted a command-and-control energy policy built on feeling good, not reality.
Left-wing politicians concerned about global warming and an aggressive EPA regulatory agenda combined to reduce use of coal in New England from almost 20 percent in 2000 to about 2 percent in 2016. Natural gas is now the primary source of power, providing about 50 percent of electricity, up from about 15 percent in 2000. Burning natural gas emits about half the carbon dioxide emitted by coal.
The dependence on natural gas is a problem in New England because radical environmental activists are blocking construction of new natural gas pipelines needed to keep up with the increase in demand. Predictably, the law of supply and demand kicked in, resulting in an explosion of natural gas prices with plummeting temperatures.
During the first round of severe winter weather at the end of December, the surge in demand made New England the worlds priciest natural gas market, where the energy commodity jumped threefold on the spot market.

How much are solar and wind energy contributing in the region right now? Are their any websites we can look at?
Are they sure it wasn’t a thermonuclear bomb cyclone?
Do snowplows run on solar power?
this article is bunk
it does not take into account imported electricity production from Canada and the Midwest
To press my point I remind them that Nothing grows in the freezing cold vs crops & trees grows faster in warm weather. Thus in reality the choice really is No Food vs Abundant Food and at lower prices for having a surplus supply. But still they bemoan Global Warming now re-labeled as Climate Change.
A while back when New Englanders were meddling in Alaska’s affairs concerning oil production we had a popular bumper sticker that read “Let the Bastards Freeze in the Dark”. Maybe it’ll come to that now.
Cold is worse to survive and thrive in.
Why are they not complaining about how warm the planet is getting?
The planet is not getting warm, it’s getting extreme. That’s science.
No more than other periods of time before.
Sun has everything to do with it.
And they should be rejoicing that Obama’s efforts to cool the planet are finally showing results. Heck, they have not seen anything yet. Wait until the grid starts going down in early February. All hail Emperor Zero and his ManBearPig.
It’s all the fault of man. We need more windmills and solar panels so we can get back to the Climate Sameness that existed for billions of years before SUVs.
Think they would rather have the heat wave about now. Bastardi thinks our later winter will be mild based on historical records. What is coming though has no human historical record. At least any records that could have survived. Might be this winter, might be next. But it is coming eventually and cannot be stopped. Just imagine the type of weather that can build mile high glaciers. That has been the normal weather on the planet for a few hundreds of thousands of years.
My electric bill here in MA is outrageous all because the moonbats refuse to have a gas pipeline built.
this has been going on for a long time.
i imagine that any solar here is now covered in 15 inches of snow.
I went to the La Brea tar pits in the LA area a while back, and it’s hard to fathom that animals such as camels, mastodons, saber toothed tigers, giant sloths, etc roamed that area a mere ten thousand years ago at the end of the last ice age.
Talk about climate change! Fascinating place.
Adam Smith’s invisible had just got frostbite.
You visited The Tar Pits tar pits?
