Soldiers in North Koreas army are being given months off at a time to scrounge around fields to find food, according to a new report that describes the dire state of the reclusive countrys food rations.
A photo purportedly showing North Korean soldiers rummaging through a corn field was published recently on Daily NK, a Seoul-based website that covers the North through a network of informants.
"The officers know better than anyone that they must feed their soldiers in order to maintain morale, and that rations of cornmeal with very few calories only serve to instill disillusionment among them, a source from the northern Ryanggang Province told the website.
Other sources said many residents have been expressing pity about the situation and officers in Ryanggang Province have been "giving soldiers 2 to 3 months leave to gather food.
The website says a poor harvest, a drought and international sanctions have left the government with reduced food rations.
Even though the price of rice hasn't changed much in the markets, people are especially worried that the effects of international sanctions will continue to mount and soon cause even more problems, a source told Daily NK.

10. following these rules will help to make sure you’re part of the 77.8% that will return from leave
My dog had some leftover filet mignon, ham and fried pork jowls yesterday.
Just saying...
We used to eat corn out of the field all the time as a kid. No treatment required. My favorite was roasted on the cob.
Yeah, except you had a piece of steak with the corn on the cob. That’s why you are alive and typing today.
“If this did turn into a conventional war I wonder how many of those troops would surrender to the South Korean forces if given the chance to do so?”
Yeah, instead of setting up artillery, just put up a buffet table. War over! better still, put up a system that “wafts” the smells of good stuff being cooked over the DMZ. Or drop a couple of planeloads of MRE’s with a note telling them where they can get more.
I think it’s a matter of how much nutritional value the food conveys untreated vs. treated and whether it is a staple in one’s diet. The treated corn flour used to make tortillas does provide more nutrition in the form of vitamins, minerals, and protein which would otherwise just pass through the gut. Malnutrition can occur if all one eats is corn. The Indians learned to soak corn in alkali water to make hominy and and then ground to make a paste or dried into a flour. Tortillas are made with a treated flour called Masa Harina.
The DNC Food Program might help.
No one is saying that untreated corn is poisonous, or entirely without nutritional value.
It's just that certain very important nutrients in corn cannot be utilized by the human body unless the corn is treated with lime.
Regards,
I’ve eaten untreated corn all my 74 years of life.
Sweet corn is a very different variety.

“...the 101st Airborne...”
There’s the answer. When the Norks start to invade, use the 101st to drop hundreds of thousands of White Castles! OR, drop hundreds of thousands of White Castles and then WE walk in with more burgers. A peaceful takeover.
This just proves what has been true all through history... Armys all travel on their stomachs!!!
Which would explain Rocketman's insane desire to get nukes.
“We used to eat corn out of the field all the time as a kid. No treatment required. My favorite was roasted on the cob. “
which is both delicious and no problem UNLESS was you stable diet ...
The invasion will stop at the first grocery store
I was also brought up on (Kentucky style - meal, butter milk, baking soda, and salt baked in a greased cast iron skillet) corn bread. But we also had butter, fried chicken, fried ham and red eye gravy, greens, and potatoes to "round out" the nutrition.
Yup. Exactly the same as me. That's the setting I'm talking about.
Great food. But it sort of requires you to lead a hard working farm life or have a hyper drive metabolism. Otherwise, the “round out” makes you truly round. My great aunt and uncle led that life and were the ones we stayed with when we visited. What I described was a typical meal. Both lived into their mid nineties. The rest of us raised on that food? Not even close. But, heh, malnutrition was never an issue.
And in the context of this article, the real point is if those starving soldiers and their officers think gleaning and eating raw field corn is going to improve their condition they’re “bark”ing up the wrong tree.
