It was six hours past midnight, but the crowd inside the Berkeley Patients Group counted down the seconds.
Happy New Year, they yelled at precisely 6 a.m. as a cashier rang up the cost of three joints, a $45.37 purchase representing one of the first recreational marijuana sales in the state.
The moment marked the launch of a new industry in California, one thats heavily regulated and taxed, with revenue reaching several billion dollars per year.
The day has been long anticipated by cannabis advocates who pushed for voters to pass Proposition 64 in November 2016, largely decriminalizing marijuana and allowing for the commercial sale of products to adults 21 or older.
Earlier, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Democratic state Sen. Nancy Skinner joined a couple dozen people outside the Berkeley Patients Group waiting for the first sales.
Im stoked about this historic moment not just for Berkeley but for the state of California. Arreguin said. This is a long time coming.

I don't know how the hell the state expects to derive any revenue when the retail price is $45 for three joints.
This isn’t going to end well...
Jack in the Box launching weed-themed Merry Munchie Meal in California!
With Californias legalization of recreational marijuana taking effect Monday, fast-food chain Jack in the Box plans to take full advantage of the pot smokers by offering a new meal aimed at anyone with the munchies.
The weed-themed Merry Munchie Meal will be available at three southern California locations beginning mid-January and includes half servings of curly fries and onion rings, two tacos, five mini churros, three crispy chicken strips and a small drink. You get all of this for the on-theme price of $4.20 plus tax.
Oh, I don't know about things not changing, I believe we are now going to see a REAL freak show out there.
.
I hate the drug culture.
People are overdosing,
because they start with one drug,
and the only thing that ends the next high
is Death itself.
How does it end?
Colorado has been having some tangible problems with their legalization. It hasn’t been a bed of roses...
The state wasn’t crazy enough already?
Have sympathy for the many normal people who live under this insane leftist government.
“is Death itself.”
If somebody is stupid enough to kill themselves with dope, I have no sympathy for them.
None.
Oh, and BTW, we’re talking about pot here. Not whiskey.
A little dab’ll do ya.
“Have sympathy for the many normal people who live under this insane leftist government.”
I would be surprised if there are 100,000 people in the whole state who are opposed. Most of those are cops who want to keep that gravy train rolling.
Drug them all out of their minds and send in some terrorists to put them out of their euphoric misery. Sounds like a good ending to me.
Once the first year’s harvest is in, prices will settle down. Six plants per household is a boatload of weed.
“Theyre sinking into the abyss and are a weight on America.”
How so?
Oh, and they have already succeeded. From an economic point of view they are the most successful state in the union.
Becoming a nation of deadheads?
For your interest.
“Six plants per household is a boatload of weed.”
My cousin in Sonoma County grew six this last year (grows were legal starting Jan 1st, 2017). Outside.
His net was just over 8 pounds of dried buds.
