The protests that have rattled Iran this weekend are in many ways an echo of the near past. In the summer of 2009, millions of Iranians took to the streets to protest the reelection of President Ahmadinejad.
The opposition believed his reelection victory was fraudulent. They chanted slogans demanding a recount of the votes. Others denounced the regime and its highest authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Hardliners and security forces confronted the crowds with anti-riot gear and harsh condemnation, often labeling them agents of foreign powers. It was a huge moment and seemed, at the time, to portend an irreversible shift in geopolitics.
Iran is experiencing the first large-scale unrests since the Green Movement faded. Since then, Iranians tackled their challenges at the ballot box rather than on the streetsin two presidential elections, both won by the moderate Hassan Rouhani; and in two parliamentary elections leading to the countrys legislative body being populated by more moderates and reformists. But familiar difficulties have returned. With the controversial nuclear dealbetween Tehran and world powers, including the United Statesfailing to deliver economic recovery for the masses, many were starting to feel restless once again.
President Trump has taken to Twitter on multiple occasions to comment. The world is watching! he tweeted on Friday. And also, the good people of Iran want change, and, other than the vast military power of the United States, that Irans people are what their leaders fear the most.
In one tweet, the president included a link to a video of his speech at the UN General Assembly in September, which was largely criticized by Iranians of all political persuasions as belligerent and disrespectful.

American Naval forces & Marines in the Strait of Hormuz.
And gunboats. Lots of gunboats.
“The fact that she refers to Rouhani as a moderate is very telling.”
I thought Rouhani was some kind of Indian pasta?/sarc
Pajama Boy I think. And the jury’s still out on the one.
And Michael....
Agreed. The vileness of that look is 100% manufactured and has nothing to do with how God created this “thing”.
And the jurys still out on THAT one.
Comments on the author’s looks are really childish and counter-productive. I looked but could not find an details on her background except that she is a Visiting Professor at Georgetown U and has been involved in the negotiations at some level. Her piece in Foreign Policy suggests that she is sympathetic to the current regime in Iran. For example, she offers not a single word of criticism for any of the regime’s policies and is, therefore, an apologist for them - IMHO. She does seem to know the actors’s names but actually provides little information on Iran’s objectives or concerns. In all, the FP piece, like this one, is singularly uninformative and certainly gives no evidence that she knows what is going on.

Who ever heard of Ariane Teletubbie anyway?
let’s try that again - oops
Yep, another leftist. Im sure she would find anything Hillary Rodham Clinton did as exceptional.
They just crank out agit-prop - all designed to feed the mushy liberal skulls still sad that Hillary lost.
Oooh! International Peace & Security! And I'll bet she thought Obama delivered both!
She also hates John Bolton, which should tell you all you need to know about her.
Fake news!
Nice find - the great Joe Flynn.
See my 75. She doesn’t realize how deceived she truly is.
Not one of those journalists is allowed in the sensitive briefing Trump gets every morning. Very few of those journalists made any comment about the billions of dollars to apply to the Iran nuclear program that was forced to be released from hundreds of banks scattered all over the world by the Clinton/Obama “treaty?”
You can also talk to the government about the American citizens still imprisoned in Iran that have not been identified except name by the media and you have to hunt for it:
Baquer and Siamak Namazi - fined $4.8 million and sentenced to prison. Sentence unknown.
Reza “Robin” Shahini - sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Karan and Afarin Vafadari - detained and finally released under investigation.
Xiyue Wang - sentenced to 10 years after being arrested for doing work in country on his PHd. dissertation from Princeton.
Anyone hear about those? And those names were not that easy to find. Part of the reason for that is like the Kim Dong Chul case in North Korea in 2015. He was arrested by North Korean forces while trying to meet a source to obtain a USB stick and camera used to gather military secrets. He admitted it and was sentenced to prison for 10 years of hard labor. So how many of these are legit or made up is unknown. But they were working for the stata department under Obama and Clinton at the time they were busted. See a pattern here?

The Atlantic is the Toilet ........lies and propaganda for the great unwashed masses of the cities.
If you don’t think Trump understands, you don’t understand Trump. He is a hell of a lot smarter than your average politician or news media reporter.
“Trump doesnt understand, but the Atlantic writers do?”
They don’t understand how a light switch works.
