At a remote military base in Jordan earlier this month, U.S. Marines were abuzz with excitement Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was in town. He would not be visiting Camp Titin, where they were training Jordanian forces but he would be nearby at an international terrorism conference in Aqaba, Jordan, and for these Marines, that was close enough.
One recalled being deployed in Afghanistan years ago, and how Mattis, then-commander of U.S. Central Command, had been just feet away from him, delivering a pep talk.

We tried to have a coin created for our work with DHA. It was easier to get a CMH made.
You should do an internet search, first, prior to nibbling on your foot.
hat was my thought as well but begs the question..... what are they?
Then.....Where will he put others he is given?
Thank you, most generals live in a bubble. I have two of these challenge coins and a large Spirit of Ohio pin. Ironically, one of the coins was for my support on systems used by and for the safety of the Secdef. If these were participation trophies I would have a basket full of them. Why do I want to spit in the face of some freepers this day, unbelievable.
Doggies festoon themselves with unit patches, badges, pogie ropes, and silly little colored beanies. They even blouse their dress trousers.
I mean, sh!t...
Challenge coins were handy in Army NCO clubs. It saved me some cash...
I read about them in the article.
It didn’t do a particularly good job of explaining them.
I’m not a big fan of symbols or symbolism, lapel pins, ribbons etc., something our government seems to love prior to Trump.
Nope, those are CCs, I’ve seen lots of them, and the rack is a handy item, when you have some personal space. (Something that is treasured, in the military.)
Before the issue of CC’s was raised here, I thought they were some sort of Law Enforcement trade item
At my sons Eagle Court of Honor, he was presented with a Challenge Coin from where I worked as a contractor to the Air Force. It meant a lot to my son. So, thanks for the kind words, like participation trophy.
You are a class guy!
Semper fi. Somehow our armed forces flourished for a couple of centuries without these. Now they’re something special?
“Some are well deserved and earned. And very hard to get.”
Now they are passed out like candy.
“You are a class guy!”
Call it like I see it. No class is passing out challenge coins for no reason, such as giving out a challenge coin from a military unit to a civilian who otherwise earned a distinction unrelated to the military. I could care less that it was your kid.
Like I said, A Classy Guy.
You are the epitome of the self-licking ice cream cone!
“You are the epitome of the self-licking ice cream cone!”
No, you are, Mrs. Defending Participation Trophies.
What a snowflake you are.
Not only have I heard of it, I have one my dad carried, but I don’t see any analogy with the “challenge coins” if that’s what you’re getting at.
Its not an exact analogy, but close. And short snorters were used in much the same way in WWII.
