When we were in Africa we would have American visitors who always asked about “Kwanzaa” celebrations. We had to explain to the school secretary what it was. She looked puzzled and said, “They don’t celebrate Christmas in America? Are they not Christians there?”

i still don’t know anyone who celebrates Kwanzaa who doesn’t also celebrate another holiday in December first (Jewish or Christian, usually)

Yeah.

And we were in Kenya at the time. It is not even a minor holiday there.

It flat out does not exist.

It is the Feast of the Cords. It commemorates the time when Ron Karenga tied up a couple of female victims and whipped them to within an inch of their lives with electrical cords, before turning to other more exotic forms of torture. I have always thought it strange that young, liberal, female school teachers would celebrate that, but it takes all kinds to make a world.

The largest single group of kwanzaa celebrants is While female mostly Jewish government school teachers. It has always been this way.

If you wish a black person Happy Kwanza, isn’t that being rascist?

Several years ago, in the Washington Times I believe, there was an article concerning kwanzaa written by a black American who was married to a black woman born and raised in Africa.

One day their children came home with special school projects for kwanzaa. Having never heard of it he asked his children who told him it was a traditional African celebration.
He asked his African born wife who hadn’t a clue.

When the teacher couldn’t give him a real explanation for this African celebration he started contacting African embassies in DC.
The first one he contacted said they had never heard of it, “try Ghana it might be one of theirs.”

He called, visited or emailed every African embassy in DC and drew a complete blank.
The best answer he got was that it was probably something dreamed up by one of the black supremacist groups here in the US. It wasn’t African.

The name comes from an East African harvest celebration. The rest was invented by Ron Maulana Karenga. He even added an a at the end.

I don't see anything about white atheists creating it.

The holiday did get some kind of following in the African-American community and I guess white multiculturalists picked it up as a Black Christmas or Hanukah.

That most African-Americans don't celebrate Kwanzaa doesn't rule out that a vocal and visible group promotes the holiday.

I was told that the only people who celebrate Kwanzaa are white female elementary school teachers.

Before I truly retired, I was employed by a marketing/merchandising corporation that did a lot to try to keep its employees' morale up--frequent food events, company-wide days off to go bowling, and so forth.
They asked the employees about the music selections on the overhead music system--frequently misunderstood as Muzak. So they took a survey. There was the usual popular music, even oldies including Doo-Wop. There was some light classics--not universally appreciated in the company, but some did. Then, for Christmas holiday music, the usual Christmas pop and more traditional carols and church-music were included. Everyone was happy.

Except one snarly African-American woman who wore heavy perfume and had no friends within the company.

She wanted kwanzaa music on the overhead music system.

The overhead music company couldn't find any.

I should have said, “At the time, the overhead music company couldn’t find any.” Thank goodness. Now, there are children’s songs on YouTube. Playing those would have destroyed all of the morale the company was working to improve.

The word sort of exists but there is not and never has been any sort of celebration by that name.

It is pure American invention, not a bit of Africa in it.
