Michael “Egg Head” Smerconish is a political shapeshifter with an unpleasant voice.
He came up through the ranks as a “conservative” talk show host in Philadelphia, but he somehow scored a major interview on health care with Sheik Obama in 2009, and he eventually parlayed that into a job with CNN as the country swung hard to the left, and he went with that trend.
As for this piece, the phrase “damning with faint praise” comes to mind. Smerconish is not a conservative. At best he is an establishment Republican.
Every time he gets close to praising Trump, he tempers that with weasel words like “for better or worse”. As long as he keeps straddling the fence by playing to both sides, his commentator job with CNN is secure.
But he is absolutely right to criticize Time for not picking Trump as Person of the Year.

Do not be discouraged by the naysayers - all mortals make mistakes and on today of all days, some slack should be cut for others.

IOW, Smerconish is a political whore.
Essentially, the commentator, Michael Smerconish, was saying that Time missed their own criteria for what constitutes a “consequential person”, and that Donald J. Trump, as President, stands way above any of the other considered.
Now, Smerconish is a kind of wild card, who probably meets every standard for a “Never-Trumper”, as he has abandoned every pretense of being conservative, and gone over to the “dark side”, for a while enjoying high status as the example that CNN was trying show was the “progressive nature” of the trend in US politics.
But now, in perhaps a moment of self-doubt, Smerconish is sort of returning to his roots, and at least recognizing some degree of reality. Has he been successfully returned to the fold? Maybe, maybe not, but he puts a lot of the milestones that Trump has surpassed into perspective.
And he’s a lawyer.
And, that is a different kind of whore?

Those are his roots. Lawyers are paid to take whatever position their clients want them to take. They live and prosper in the swamp. So yes, in a sense, that makes them whores.

I listened to that weasel years ago on PHT out of Philly. He”changed his stripes” for access and advancement and money. He’s an opportunist, a weasel and a whore. He’d sell his mother for some silver dust, since he already sold his soul. I wouldn’t welcome that dirtbag back “into the fold” because he’d just do it to sabotage whatever he could get his grubby little lawyer hands on. He sucks and he’s a POS.
