A reluctant LiAngelo Ball said that he wouldn’t have thanked President Trump if his school hadn’t instructed him to do so.
The former University of California, Los Angeles, basketball player said that school officials told him to thank the president in his statement to the press after being released from a Chinese prison following an arrest for shoplifting.
“My school wanted to hear it,” he told the New York radio show. “If they didn’t tell me to do it, it wouldn’t have been in there, to be honest.”
He added: “Before I went up there, it was like, ‘You’ve got to thank him.’ I just threw him in there real quick right before I gave my speech.”
The players were arrested one day before Trump visited China last month.
After their release, he tweeted, “Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for 10 years in jail!”
Afterwards, during a press conference, Ball and the other two players apologized and thanked Trump.
The story didn't end there. Ball's father, LaVar Ball, declined to give Trump credit, invoking the president's ire, and remarked that he would have thanked Trump if he brought his son home from China on Air Force One.
“I would have said thank you if he would have put them on his plane and taken them home. Then I would have said, ‘Thank you, Mr. Trump, for taking my boys out of China and bringing them back to the U.S.’ There’s a lot of room on that plane. I would have said thank you kindly for that,” he said in an interview.
UCLA suspended Ball and the other two players after the incident. Ball took it a step further by pulling his son out of the university.

I cant even imagine the agony that Otto Warnbiers parents must feel at having to see these graceless punks elevated to fame for disrespecting the President that literally saved their lives.
Perhaps more appropriately:

That ungrateful brat would have benefited from more time behind bars. I’m confident that will happen to him, eventually, since he was too stupid to learn from his close call.

The players were detained in their hotel for a few days.
Have fun playing in Lithuania you little mutt. By the way, if you steal stuff there you will learn about regrets, things that might have been and decisions you made that went very, very awry.

Really, scarifying your 16 year old for basketball? What happened if he has a career ending accident, Mr. Bell? You think the taxpayers should pay for your stupid decision? I sure the hell don't!!
Why would anyone in similar circumstances not think to offer an expression of gratitude on his own? Why would anyone have to “force” him?

LiAngelo sucks as both a human and a player. The only reason he got signed in Lithuania is that he came as a package deal that included his brother LaMello.
LaMello? “la” is the feminine French article. So is LaMello a girl?

Like it or not, you and your pals gave the President-you-love-to-hate a huge political win.
Because you were stupid enough to shoplift in China, and get caught in China, President Trump got to show the world that he could force a nation to back down and give him what he wanted, which was your freedom.
You're not special. President Trump would have demanded, and received, freedom for any American held by the Chinese government. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you delivered a significant win to President Trump.
Let that sink in.
