Another former Facebook executive has spoken out about the harm the social network is doing to civil society around the world. Chamath Palihapitiya, who joined Facebook in 2007 and became its vice president for user growth, said he feels tremendous guilt about the company he helped make. I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works, he told an audience at Stanford Graduate School of Business, before recommending people take a hard break from social media.
Palihapitiyas criticisms were aimed not only at Facebook, but the wider online ecosystem. The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops weve created are destroying how society works, he said, referring to online interactions driven by hearts, likes, thumbs-up. No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. And its not an American problem this is not about Russians ads. This is a global problem.
He went on to describe an incident in India where hoax messages about kidnappings shared on WhatsApp led to the lynching of seven innocent people. Thats what were dealing with, said Palihapitiya. And imagine taking that to the extreme, where bad actors can now manipulate large swathes of people to do anything you want. Its just a really, really bad state of affairs. He says he tries to use Facebook as little as possible, and that his children arent allowed to use that shit. He later adds, though, that he believes the company overwhelmingly does good in the world.

Facebook is only a inert tool, like a machete, a gun or a car or a dinner fork.
Liberals always blame the tool when it is human behavior and a lack of self control that is the problem.
Did you see Chelsea Handler making fun of Sarah Sanders looks? How is that different from the little boy in the car crying to his mother about bullies in school making fun of him?
These hypocritical celebs are really pissing me off.
[He later adds, though, that he believes the company overwhelmingly does good in the world.
So its ripping society apart, but overwhelmingly does good.]
No kidding. What a moron. He could be David Frum or an MSNBC “anchor”.
Yes, the Internet and the Information Age are ripping the Truthful from the Dishonest and Delusional.
What he means is, the left has lost control of it.
Abandon Fecebook.
The money you generate with every log in is used against US.
Yeah I saw that. Hollywood celebrities are the biggest bullies I’ve ever seen.
It appears this Dr. Morbius has some clue. An entire planet’s population had to be wiped out before the quest for truth was found on “Forbidden Planet” Progress has its downfalls.
LOL! Made me think of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhxqIITtTtU
What is so pathetic is all of these very fake stories on Facebook that people do not bother to check before posting. That’s what is creating a lot of commotion!
If used correctly, social media is an excellent vehicle to get your views across. Look at Trump. He is a master at it. I use it for political news and viewpoints. Very little personal things. I get lots of news via FB and Twitter.
“Most social media places the users into the mental universe of cruel middle school girls at recess.”
That is one hellacious mental universe you’re talking about! I don’t mess around on facebook myself. I let my wife talk me into letting her create a page for me but I never go there since the first few weeks. I tried to take it down but it seems impossible.
As a misanthrope, I usually feel right at home here.
Meanwhile, Facebook has added a messaging service for 6- to 12-year-olds. They all know what they're doing, making life harder for all the parents who don't have nannies on shift 24/7.
On the upside, my husband finally figured out what I meant by "internet kill switch," and now I have a sharp little system whereby I can disconnect any device from the network with just a click. The teenagers hate it even though I haven't used it yet, bwahahahahaha!
Another nice rule would be no smart phones for children. Or adults for that matter.
FR is my oasis, my escape from the political correct Brave New World that no longer allows humor or human imperfection. We’re the only sane ones remaining. <^..^>
Personally I think the divisiveness in this country has been exponentially worsened by Facebook. It used to be people knew what to say/not to say in a civil society. Then along came Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and more where people can post whatever offensive brain-fart they think of, or tell someone off whenever they feel like it.
Social Media is the worst thing to happen in this country in my lifetime, IMO. (Well, second to 9-11-01 anyway...)
