I always linked that directly to the ‘Great Society’ invoked by LBJ
He (rightfully so) basically proclaimed that ‘majority’ America would not sit by and let them ‘dudes’ sit up in there while the women were drawing ‘public money’.
The Movie ‘Cinderella Liberty’(1973) hit that subject when the broke sailor was living with his girlfriend who was on Public Assistance (both White) and the ‘Welfare Lady’ said if HE had ‘assumed the role’ SHE would be removed from the rolls - so either throw him out or get thrown off.
Easy decision when the man is BROKE and the Welfare Lady oversees the issuance of a check.
So in effect the Great Society succeeded in doing what Slavery, Poverty, 2 World Wars & a ‘Police Action’ couldn’t- it broke up the basic Black Family along with the really lower income White Family.
