Not only is President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy there one of the boldest moves of his presidency. It is one of the boldest moves any U.S. president has made since the beginning of the Oslo "peace process" in 1993. That process collapsed at Camp David in 2000 when Yasir Arafat rejected President Clinton's offer of a Palestinian state. And the process has been moribund ever since, despite multiple attempts to restart it.
That is why the warnings from Trump critics that his decision may wreck the peace process ring hollow. There is no peace process to wreck. The conflict is frozen. And the largest barriers to the resumption of negotiations are found not in U.S. or Israeli policy but in Palestinian autocracy, corruption, and incitement. Have the former Obama administration officials decrying Trump's announcement read a newspaper lately? From listening to them, you'd think it would be all roses and ponies in the Middle East but for Trump. In fact, the region is engulfed in war, terrorism, poverty, and despotism; Israel faces threats in the north and south; its sworn enemy, Iran, is growing in influence and reach; and the delegitimization of the Jewish State proceeds apace in international organizations and on college campuses. I forget how the Obama administration advanced the cause of peace by pressuring Israel while rewarding the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world. Maybe someone will remind me.

I don't think it makes sense to move the embassy to Jerusalem anytime soon, but this point is 100% correct.
I believe the wisdom of Trump's decision is that it may have effectively told the Palestinians: "That offer you got in 2000 was the best one you're ever going to get."

Can someone explain how moving the US embassy to Jerusalem benefits the United States of America? Isn’t US national interest what Trump bases his foreign policy upon? Seems a colossal waste of money for symbolism.
The only thing I can conceive of is that Trump stirred this up as a free bargaining chip, much as the Chinese used to torment dissidents so Democrats would give them something to stop.
First, it was something we promised to Israel over forty years ago.
Two, it keeps the media focused on something other than what President Trump is about to do to the FBI and many Democrats.
Three, it made you angry so there must be something good to it.
It really doesn't.
What benefits the U.S. is stability in the region, and despite all the howls of protest you hear from around the world over the decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, it will actually result in much more stability in that region. Establishing and protecting any area as part of a sovereign nation (even a hostile one) is far better than leaving it in some kind of quasi-autonomous state as a U.N. protectorate.
No. Time to realize that Muslims see peace as only the opposite phase of war. They recognize strength because they are tribal. The strongest have the power. We will have peace, until “they” see an opportunity to challenge the “leader” again, proving they have the strength to wield the power.
So you think it makes sense for other countries to have their US embassy in Cleveland? Jerusalem is the capital of Israel it’s where their government offices are, it’s where our congress passed a law for us to put our embassy many years ago.
The POTUS is supposed to uphold the laws. We have had one ball less President after another who didn’t have what it takes to do their job. We have one now, but it’s no wonder you are confused. Ignoring laws has become the norm
I would add that there is value to re-asserting American leadership on the world stage.
Right after the election last year, I was listening to Jay Sekulow’s radio program and they were discussing this move. They also got into something distrurbing that I haven’t seen mentioned, but I’ll bring it up. Jay said that not only does Trump intend to move the embassy to Jerusalem, but he wants to see the Jewish temple rebuilt. Jay said he’d had discussions with Trump’s team about it. It’s probably nonsense, but Trump thinks really big. There are few things he could do on the world stage that would have more significance than pave the way for a rebuilt temple. I can only guess at the fallout. I would like to go back and listen to everything Sekulow said. I’d dismiss it completely but Jay does have connections to Trump.
Trump is basically saying to the muslim world, "you wanna rage...then rage away." "But if you want to make a deal, behave like civilized people."
Trump will get vastly more mileage out of this move to Jerusalem than our other presidents have gotten by their appeasement of muslims.
You cannot appease muslims because they will take and take and never give an inch.

Can you imagine the squawking? I used the word disturbing, but that is not really the right word. I simply know a push for a rebuilt temple would have major consequences and I’m not sure what they are. If there’s anything to the idea, I’d like to know his plan for the Al-Aqsa Mosgue. Whatever it is, it’s more bold than making Mexico pay for the damn wall.
Some archaeologists believe the Temple was not located where the Dome of the Rock is, but as much as 300 feet to the north.

Why do they build their satanic “temples” in strategic places like the Temple Mount?
Because the average mohammedan is ignorant but the symbols of their “religion” keep the commands of their false prophet front and center in their lives.
It is why they wanted a “temple” as close to the former WTC in NYC as possible. It would be a symbol of their “victory”.
They are 7th century savages to whom symbolism is #2 in their lives.
President Trump is merely speaking their language.
