President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's official capital and his announcement that he would move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to that city has not only sparked outrage in the Middle East but also in Europe.
One European leader who has condemned Trump's announcement is Angela Merkel, the German chancellor. Although you'd expect her to tread extremely carefully when talking about the Jewish nation-state -- considering her country's horrible record regarding the treatment of Jews -- nothing could be further from the truth.
"The federal government doesn't understand this decision because the status of Jerusalem must be negotiated within the framework of the two-state solution," the Bundeskanzlerin says through her spokesman Steffen Seiber. That is why, she adds, the German government does not support Trump's decision.
Her foreign secretary, Sigmar Gabriel, agrees with Merkel's position. "I believe that it carries the risk that an already difficult situation in the Middle East and in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians will escalate even further," he added to Merkel's statement. He also complained that Trump's announcement supposedly ignores the Palestinians' interests and marks a 180 turn of the previous U.S. policy. "And that worries us," Gabriel said. "We hope that this concerns can be taken away, but this turnaround is already a big problem."
We all know the far-reaching impact this move would have, Gabriel added. Germanys position on this issue remains unchanged: A solution to the Jerusalem problem can only be found through direct negotiations between both parties. Everything which worsens the crisis is counterproductive.

Angela Merkel can go to hell as far as I am concerned.
In any matter related to Israel, the leader of Germany should keep absolutely silent.
I've got her two-state solution right here:
East and West Germany.
Merkel and the Muslims can go to East Germany, and we can rebuild the wall.
Only this time, it'll be the *West* Germans keeping people from leaving the East. /ba-dum t'sssssh>
Anything that pisses her off is a good thing.
Merkel and her pyjama boy Siggie can stop dictating what the Jews should and shouldn’t do. Go now tend to your local Jihadists Merkel and shut up about Israel.
Angela, oh Angela,... bleep off!
Either President Trump is moving the embassy and making Jerusalem the capital, or he wants something huge to leave it where it is. AOTD.
“In any matter related to Israel, the leader of Germany should keep absolutely silent.”
I concur. I was stationed in Germany in the late 80’s early 90’s
Merkel is mad and she is destroying Germany. My God, that country is soon to be overwhelmed.
It’s naught but the size of Montana.....
Saarlandistan bitte!
“Merkel Condemns Trump Decision on Jerusalem, Pushes Two-State Solution”
Germans STILL trying to destroy Jews ...
Merkel is a buffoon, as is May, as is Macron. The leaders of Western Europe are all fools, the naive, spoiled products of 70 years of US coddling and protection from the USSR and from each other. They value political correctness over self-preservation, ethical foreign policy and logic - armed with that insight, everything that comes out of their mouths is predictable.
Ah, her and Theresa May are still mad about Hillary losing.
Germany is not allowed to talk about jews. They had their say already.
Germany should STFU about anything Jewish. Israel is not a German interest.
And a two state solution is lunacy.
You got it. It's just an embassy, and it's our embassy. Germany has no say in this. In a way, it's a plus for the Palestinians. They want Jerusalem as their capital of a Palestinian state. So Trump caters to both by moving our embassy there, to handle stuff for the two states. Easy.
The larger picture is that the peace process has gone no where for 22 years since the law was passed to move our embassy to Jerusalem. So President Trump created a bargaining chip for himself by saying he'll move the embassy, and can trade that off in exchange for something big in any new peace discussions. This will provide a reason for the Palestinians to get off their butts and actually discuss peace. Which of course they don't really want, but we all know that. When the talks fail (again), we will have our embassy in Jerusalem, where it belongs.
The two state solution exists today. One state is Israel. The second state is the entire Arab World from Indonesia to Morocco. We are talking about land area thousands of time larger than Israel.
The two state solution for Israel in the land of Judea really means the end of Israel.

Nicely stated.
