WASHINGTON Drivers on eastbound Interstate 66 saw tolls fluctuate frantically and top out at almost $35 during the Monday morning commute, the first with dynamic tolling on the highway.
Rush-hour tolling began at 5:30 a.m. and early morning drivers saw tolls at around $3.50. Within an hour, the tolls had risen to $10 and eventually reached $34.50 at the height of rush-hour. By 9 a.m., prices were back down to below $10, said WTOPs traffic reporter Dave Dildine, who spent the morning driving on I-66 to report the latest conditions.
Its going to take some time for us to kind of get everything smoothed out and see what those toll prices are going to be consistently, Jenni McCord with the Virginia Department of Transportation told WTOP on Monday.
Traffic moved smoothly throughout the morning and WTOPs traffic center reported that the number of drivers on I-66 declined compared to typical Monday morning volume.
There were no delays inside the Beltway thats the point of congestion pricing to keep the carpools and paying solo drivers moving. As demand goes up, the price does too, said WTOPs traffic reporter Dave Dildine.
The George Washington Parkway absorbed the brunt of the traffic, with Virginia Route 123 and U.S. 50 picking up extra drivers as well. A WTOP listener reported that getting onto Interstate 495 south in Fairfax County was a mess during the rush hour.

There will be a lot more sick days..
The new toll road in Austin, TX has the same fluctuation rates. If you’re a min wage worker, by Friday you’ve already spent a day’s pay on tolls. Looks like DC tolls are even higher. So much for that $15/hr flipping burgers. You’d now needs double that just to get to work.
Question_. What if you don’t have an EZ pass? What if you are from out of town and dont know how the system works but you get in the wrong lane by accident? What if you don’t have EZ pass but get in the lane anyway? How do they enforce it?
I am so glad I don’t live in an area with toll roads.
Just looking out for.the little.guys. Thanks govenor.
Plate readers and cameras.
So much easier to get that old Kickback money by charging outrageous toll prices than actually building roads. No wonder politicians love toll roads.
Of course that’s what the original term highway robbery meant.
. . . and inflatable dummies to use that HOV lane for free.
They probably take a picture of your license plate and send a bill..with extra charges....they do that on the toll road around Denver..no ezay pass there
Terry Mccaullif’s way of raising state revenue while trying to force global warming crap on people so they’ll carpool? If this doesn’t turn the state red, I don’t know what will. There are going to be a lot of people either really really late to work, or just not showing up. (I guess NOW they’ll HAVE TO raise the minimum wage to $15/hour.) WOW. A liberal/progressive/communist utopia!
Fascism is when government and big business work together to squeeze an entire population. Our taxes used to build roads... We sheeple forget, pay, and do what we’re told.
But it's okay because the bureaucracy gets the dough.

The point of the fluctuating toll lanes is to keep drivers out of them. If the price is high enough people will opt to use the free lanes no matter how crowded. You pay to keep moving at 60-65 mph. Too many cars go in the toll goes up. Nobody HAS to pay the toll, it’s a matter of “how much is your time worth”? Basic economics. Supply/demand I will supply you a fast lane and the price depends on how many bidders there are.
"...what if you dont have EZ-Pass?..."
Cameras aimed at tags. If they use the camera the toll is even higher.
