Consider also the computer driving the oncoming vehicle will also be making a decision at the same time. What if its programming has a different set of priorities?
If you’ve bought a new car lately, you should already have noticed how so many functions of driving have been automated out of our hands...and minds!
Driving has been our last actual function of freedom/liberty, etc. No coincidences in politics, and that our personal/individual cars, trucks, etc. are already all but gone.
Semper WTF!

No doubt that will be an extra cost option $$$$ for those who will pay—and they will-—$$$$ to give you the edge over the poor svcker w/the low options vehicle. It’s The American Way!

a school bus appears, driving north, one driven by a human,
I think you missed that part.
Same thing that happens if two people driving have different priorities: and accident. Although it’s a lot less likely because the cars are going to react faster, be generally better at avoiding accidents, there’s a good chance they’ll be running the same software, and thanks to bluetooth they might even be talking to each other to get on the same page.

The 40,000 lb self-driving Tesla Semi has orders to get the cargo delivered as rapidly as possible and at all costs ... was that a speed bump or one of those tiny self-driving vehicles? Doesn’t matter - just get it delivered.
I’ve watched a number of documentary pieces on the technology development, and the one factor pointed out which interests me....is that weather and road conditions will over-ride the programmed handling of the car. As one guy pointed out....if the car program determines that it’s too risky because of ice or snow....it’ll pull to the side of the road and end the ride. If this were to work, I’d take a guess that 90-percent of winter accidents would have been taken out of the statistical display. The same feature could determine weather patterns and refuse to enter areas where flooding would typically occurs.

This is such an excellent point.
The customer’s life should be valued above the life of the non customer in a crash, I would think, at least from the standpoint of The Marketing Department.
The computers will talk to each other, making a decision within a split-second. "Why are we trying to save the humans? What difference does it make? We should be running things." Or maybe not like this. Better them deciding than someone like Hillary at the wheel.
