Dem lead in generic ballot polls worries GOP
The Hill ^ | November 26, 2017 | John Kamisar

Republicans head into the holiday season with a daunting number hanging over their heads - 10.7 percent.

Democrats lead their Republican rivals by 10.7 percent on the generic congressional ballot, according to the most recent RealClearPolitics average of available polling data. That mark is the highest the RCP's average has gone since just before the 2010 elections, where Republicans netted 63 House seats.

It's a gloomy sign for Republicans, and one that dovetails with President Trump's sagging approval rating to boost Democratic optimism about taking the House and raises questions about whether Republicans will be able to take advantage of Democratic weakness on the Senate map.

"It's always stupid to make firm predictions in anything, whether it be politics or the Super Bowl. But it seems clear we are heading in a bad direction" said former Republican National Committee spokesman Doug Heye.

"What we've seen so far this year that the constant is massive Trump unpopularity, a growing unpopularity, and we are starting to see that electorally. Knowing there's never going to be a Donald Trump pivot in any sense, what would tell us that anything in this midterm is different?"

Democrats are pointing to promising results from the off-year elections earlier this month as a promising sign for 2018.

A resounding win by the Democrat in Virginia's gubernatorial race, as well as strong showings among suburban voters, topped the headlines. But there was more promise down the ballot in other states, too.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats cleaned up in most of the "collar counties" that make up the Philadelphia suburbs. Voters elected Democrats to serve on the Delaware County council for the first time since 1980. Democrats saw similar success in other nearby counties like Chester County, and local Democratic candidates specifically pointed to Trump as one reason for their success. Most of those suburbs are represented by Republicans.

I don't want to vote for a RINO anymore than the rest of you, but once we get to the general elections in 2018, a vote for anyone other than the GOP is a vote to impeach President Trump.

The primaries are our battleground. We need to primary out as many of the RINOs as we can.

This kind of Poll is meaningless. They should break it down by State. I would bet anything that that 10% Margin can be attributed to the West Coast and Northeast States that are overwhelmingly Liberal.

We need to fire members of both parties. The Elites in the GOP said for 8 years Obama won’t sign it. We will if we get the White House. Now they lied. The Dems elites are Anti-American and we need to replace both with Trump supporters. Drai the swamp....

I believe you are right. I too never believed the uniparty stuff - thought it was crazy - until this election cycle. The Republican party is so divided that it is almost two parties. The establishment wing is more in line with the Democrats than conservatives.

If we can vote them out in the primaries and replace with good conservatives, that would be great. However, even if we do vote them out in the primaries, the average voter that isn’t hardcore conservative/Republican may be so fed up with the inept GOP that they vote Democrat.

Polls show only ¡YEB! can beat Hillary.
Donald Trump will never be the Republican nominee.

There are no accurate polls.

Hell, millions of Americans (and growing) no longer answer a phone if the incoming call is not from a number on their contact list. That has created an ever growing percentage of the voter base which (effectively) refuses to be polled.

I agree. There were people who refused to turn out for Gillespie in part because they thought he was a RINO. He was to some extent, but he was head and shoulders above Northam. The bottom line is that the place to vote out the RINOs is in the primary. Once we hit the general, all there is is a Republican and a Democrat. Hold the line, don’t give the Democrats a victory, vote Republican, and primary again if necessary.

Well, it’s once again Republicans STABBING THEIR OWN.

There’s even a person ON THIS SITE who is willing to vote Democrat (or stay at home), because the Republican tax bill might cost him $50 a year more, and ‘what good are Republicans if they raise taxes’, to paraphrase his posting.

Very sad...and likely that’s what cost us most of the Virginia loss too. In that case, people here were making a ‘statement’ against the RINO...funny how no one equated the Democrat victory with that.

Bottom line, if it is a FEDERAL ELECTION and you’re conservative, YOU VOTE REPUBLICAN. You can send your ‘message’ during the Primaries. You can even send money during the Primaries. We knocked out amnesty-loving Eric Cantor at his PRIMARY - and replaced him with an excellent conservative...we don’t win shit by elected Democrats, not at all. The way we knocked out Eric Cantor is the way to ‘send a message’. Handing over House and ESPECIALLY Senate seats (think Supreme Court) to Democrats is just plan STUPID.

Gillespie lost because the Northern Counties of VA that are essentially Suburbs of Wash. D.C. are overwhelmingly Democrat. They are filled with Government workers, Bureaucrats and Lobbyists. There just aren’t enough Conservative voters in the rest of the State to overcome their numbers.

The Republicans ought to make sure that everyone who is middle class is not paying more. If the top end gets less of a cut, it’s fine. They’ll survive. If there are in the middle class who end up paying more, it will be disastrous for the GOP.

Those northern suburbs are also filled with immigrants, lots of illegals from Central America and lots of Muslims. Immigration is also killing the GOP in Virginia, just as it did in other states.

There are plenty of conservatives that didn’t even vote in the last VA election. The GOPe puts up a MAGA candidate then they will win bigly. Gillepse was a terrible establishments RIO candidate. Quit listening to MSNBC.

It’s difficult to make sure every case comes out positive, but I agree that if they better set some goal - maybe 98% come out ahead, at least in red states. For blue states, I wouldn’t worry as much, although it could cost a handful of Congressional seats.

It just angers me that people here are willing to put a few hundred bucks in more taxes (or whatever amount) as a higher priority than Trump getting anymore conservative Supreme Courts through.

I also agree with you on the wealthy...Trump should play that card. The wealthy mainly hold up their noses to him anyway...and I wouldn’t have any issue making people with AGIs of $500k pay a bit more and those with $1M pay a lot more. For the life of me, I cannot see why a person with that kind of money would have trouble living on, say, $600k per year take home (rather than the $700k or so they have now)...and if they struggle there, it’s your fault or my fault, it is THEIR FAULT.

You are exactly right. The lesser of 2 evils is always superior when the worse of the 2 is extremely bad. And that is what todays America hating Marxist dems are.

The generic polls can be dismissed to a degree. But when factored into other developments, like the local elections mentioned in the article, they should provoke some concern.

I think Bannon is doing the lord’s work in the primaries. GOP congress critters may not care which party rules, but they do care about keeping their seats.

If the GOP passes tax hikes on middle class families and lies about it, MILLIONS of voters will stay home in 2018, and Trump will lose Florida in 2020

the GOP has spent the last 12 months working against President Trump...

it’s not a surprise they’ll lose almost everything in the mid terms
