Thanksgiving was at home with my parents on leave

BUT Christmas, flew out of Charleston, SC to Holy Loch, Scotland. SUBLANT had decided that since the BLUE crew had spent Thanksgiving out at sea, that the GOLD crew would fly over a week early to get that crew home for New Years.

I remember like it was yesterday standing on the tender looking down at the JA for the first time....

Amazed all around in USAF boot camp ( 1979 ) by making “sandwiches” out of the meat disks and crackers. I had C-rats years before. Thought people there would figure it out themselves but none did till they saw me doing it. In all cases the C-rats were pre Vietnam war.

Spent my 1st military birdgiving at Lowry AFB, Colorado in aircraft weapons tech school. Was home for Christmas.

Did you ever see the headless major at the alert facility there? I heard stories about him. Was supposedly killed in Vietnam ( Arc Light? ) but still haunted that area. Every time he came up in conversation I would ask if we still had to salute him as he was not wearing a cover. Nobody could answer it.

My education at Harmony Church began in November of 1968. I swear I still have a chigger buried in my left butt cheek from the experience.

Interesting thread, proud to be with y’all. 1970 — NAS Corpus Christi (CNAVAVANTRA) mess hall (good stuff); 1971-1972 — aboard DE-1022, homeport Naples, Italy; ASW (chasing Soviet subs from one end of the med to the other); wrote tons of enemy sighting reports. They really did feed us “forward deployed” units quite well. Out to sea 75% (out three weeks, and visited ancient Rome sites about every week ashore).
