Is it an honor? Consider that Adolf Hitler was their Man of the Year in 1938. Stalin was their Man of the Year in 1939 and again in 1942. Even further to the Left were MOTYs Obama and Clinton.

No it’s not necessarily an honor, but a recognition of the biggest newsmaker. Ayatollah Khomeini won it in 1979 due to the Iranian revolution and hostage crisis.

Time had considered Bin Laden in 2001 due to the September 11th attacks, but instead gave it to Rudy Giuliani in honor of his leadership in the aftermath of the attacks. I think people thinking that they were honoring Bin Laden was a bridge too far for Time.
