Supporters of trophy hunting say that permit fees from the practice, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars in the case of large game like elephants, can be put toward conservation efforts that help bolster the populations of endangered animals.
In part, that's the logic behind the Trump administration's reversal of an Obama-era ban on importing African elephant trophies from Zimbabwe.
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has made a finding that the killing of African elephant trophy animals in Zimbabwe, on or after January 21, 2016, and on or before December 31, 2018, will enhance the survival of the African elephant,” according to a notice posted Friday in the federal register. If an animal is no longer fertile it is competing for resources that other fertile animals could use. If you want to save the species you need to cull the herd.

I’d bet they’d make YUGE $$$ offering up *that* kind of hunt. Some real sickos, I’m sure, but damn, I’d bet they’d get the job done.

As usual and sadly,!it depends on who is putting together and analyzing the data.
Trump really lost a lot on this one.
And there was trophy hunting during those years from 1995 to 2001. If the stats imply anything, it's that the Obama policy backfired, and led to a decline in elephants. More likely hunting had nothing to do with it one way or another. But the implication that Trump's policy is wrong because populations declined during the Obama years makes no sense at all.
Really ? Last I heard the number of elephants was down markedly in areas of Zimbabwe where trophy hunting is allowed, mostly thanks to poaching. Of course that isn’t stopping Trump. Now he wants to kill lions.
