Montgomery County’s $15 minimum wage bill signed into law
Washington ComPost ^ | 11/13/17 | Rachel Siegel

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) signed legislation Monday that requires a $15-an-hour minimum wage starting in 2021 for businesses with at least 51 employees, and giving smaller businesses a bit more time to implement that wage.

The wealthy county is the first jurisdiction in Maryland, and the second in the region behind the District, to adopt a $15 minimum, which has become a central focus of the progressive movement in recent years. Leaders of the business community oppose the law and say it will put Maryland’s largest jurisdiction at a disadvantage compared to its suburban neighbors.

Advocates are vowing to use the legislation’s passage to renew their push for a statewide $15 minimum, noting that Montgomery is the only suburban U.S. jurisdiction to mandate the wage in a state that has not enacted a similar law statewide.

The purpose of the minimum wage is to price small businesses out of the market to the big-government/big-corporate/big-union criminal complex can have a monopoly.

Why not $20 in 2020? I guarantee you, that will be the new chant of the Left immediately after the mid-terms.

Lunch shift...local McDonald's....15 people making $10/hr becomes 5 people making $15/hr.

Or maybe ordering kiosks are introduced...which means 3 people making $15/hr.

Meaning some smaller companies will have to reduce its number of employees. Some larger companies will not be able to absorb the expanse and dissolve.

Knowing that....the purpose of any new small business would be to make a fortune with less then 50 employees....

I live here and I’ not Lolling!!!!

“The wealthy county” maybe. We have our super rich in Potomac and Bethesda but not the rest of the county. And the ruling idiots here didn’t learn from Seattle. It will cost many people their jobs.

We’re also a sanctuary county. Almost all the rape are by guys from El Salvador (MS-13).

I already do all my shopping in Virginia.(lower tax and no bag tax!!)

Montgomery Kounty is quickly becoming a middle class hellhole.

Why $15? Because leftists have not a single original thought in their heads. Why not $20 or $50 or $75? Think of how well off the minimum wage workers would live!!! Of course, how long before McDonald’s stops paying by the hour and goes to a flat salary? Surely the leftists are able to out think a massive mega company? Right???

More correctly, it is so the govt can get more money flowing into their coffers by virtue of increased local, county, state and federal withholding.

This increase will come from working employees' taxes, as well as from increased prices on goods as a consequence of raising prices to cover the increased wages. More sales taxes as well.

Then there is the increased cost of goods and services to the public, which has to shell out more money to buy the same level of stuff.

So, in essence, price and wages go up, purchasing power remains the same, govt gets more income in taxes, and the consumer, you and I, pay the freight.

Boiled down, it is a tax increase in disguise, and the sheep eat it up.
