The article illustrates clearly why our Founders unanimously supported a republican form of government. The theory is that people are much better at identifying the wisest of their peers and not very capable of identifying wise policies.

As bad as the situation is today, any trend toward direct democracy represents a threat to our welfare and prosperity.
