Virginias campaign for governor ends Tuesday with polling suggesting a tight contest between Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam, leaving Libertarians yet again a potentially influential factor.
Libertarian Cliff Hyra, a patent attorney, is unlikely to win a large share of the vote, with polls suggesting 3 percent at most, but its a clear possibility he will take more votes than the race's margin of victory.
The third partys leaders say that doesnt matter, and that Hyras individual-rights platform is worth supporting regardless of electoral consequences not a new argument for Libertarians, twice accused of contributing to recent Republican defeats in Virginia.

Getting liberal democrats elected to office is pretty much the only thing libertaraians can do with any regularity.
Exactly what they have done more than a few times in CO. They have helped turn us purple.
I confess I was a registered Libertarian for 35 years. I noticed a clear pattern. Voting for Libertarian candidates elected Democrats.
I saw it over and over and over. It took me a while, but I finally learned.
The Libertarians deny this, of course. They stick to the fantasy that they hurt both sides equally.
That is a lie.
If the Democrat wins this race there won't be any individual rights for anyone. Cliff Hyra is like all of the other Libertarian Candidates; stupid and selfish.
On the other hand, if the GOP wants libertarian votes, maybe they need to offer them more than they have been. Pretty much our approach seems to be, “vote for the us because the dems are worse, but we will do nothing special to earn your vote, AND we don’t really care about anything you care about anyway.”
With that mentality, expect them to run their own guy again and again.
“If the Democrat wins this race there won’t be any individual rights for anyone.”
It would be helpful if the GOP was easily identifiable as different. The GOP isn’t real big on the rights of the individual either.
If you’re a Libertarian, why wouldn’t you vote for Gillespie? . . duh. . Throw away your vote? Oh yeah, you’ll ‘feel better’ voting for Hyra. Look at the big picture here, it’s communism or America and all that it stands for. It’s your call.
Agreed, and it it wasn’t for the threat of possible constitutionally minded spoilers the GOP would be worse than it is now.
It can’t happen —NO! This is why I no longer favor legalization of pot; etc. Look how weird and idiotic the Libertarians are. Is it a result of all the drugs they take?
Bump for a GOP sweep tomorrow including growing the majority in the House of Delegates.
THE problem with them is they criticize both parties EQUALLY even though they are more in tune with us. They cost the Dakotas and Montana their Senate seats in the past. Hopefully no more.

I looked through his stated positions. I’m not in 100% with him on some environmental things, but good lord, look down this list of licenses, taxes and Virginia traffic enforcement petty over-reach that he wants fully repealed. Look at his education and healthcare positions.
Look at the nutty Virginia liquor laws he wants ended.
If the GOP looks at his list of positions and cannot find a way to have common cause with him, that tells us more about the Virginia GOP than it does the Libertarian.
Which is why the Democrat Party throws money at them.
‘They cost the Dakotas and Montana their Senate seats in the past. Hopefully no more.’
yes, and in 2012 when Romney was the GOP candidate, how many freepers came on here prattling about voting third party, and party politics be damned...?
Spot on.
I’ve been on record before predicting VA elections much closer in the right direction than pollsters say and was right. I think Gillespie wins tomorrow.
I certainly hope you are right! But my understanding of Virginia is the Northern part of the State sinks the vote elsewhere. Just not sure about turnout tomorrow...
Libertarians dont give a flip what happens to the election. They cant win so would rather watch everyone lose
