Ted Cruz warns of ‘profound damage’ to U.S. economy if Trump kills NAFTA

WASHINGTON—Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz warned Tuesday that the United States would face “massive economic costs” if President Donald Trump killed the North American Free Trade Agreement — but that Trump might go ahead and make that decision.

Cruz said “NAFTA has created millions of jobs across the United States,” and he said “Texans believe in international trade.” He expressed concern that Trump, whom he generally supports, would seek to use the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation to reduce trade and erect protectionist barriers rather than to expand trade.

Reducing access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, Cruz said, would “do profound damage to the American economy and to Texas in particular.”

“Which direction will the administration go? I will tell you candidly: I don’t know,” Cruz said at the pro-NAFTA U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. His comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding Donald Trump’s intentions.

What good are “millions of new jobs” when we have 50 million illegal aliens in this country? We can import the billion poorest people on earth to the US and create a billion new jobs very quickly and the economic numbers would look amazing and the value of labor in the US would become that of the third world hut dweller. Pennies per hour. That is called “great economic news”.

And since you wish to hit below the belt, I have no issue with “fellow Americans” as you call it. My issue is with an over reaching Federal beuracracy that stands in the way of economic liberty. If I wish to buy a widget made in Zimbabwe because my widget is regulated to death here and is 50% of my cost because of said regulation before an American worker has even touched the material to make it then hell yes I’ll do my business with Zimbabwe to compete on the global market!! That doesn’t make me a loser, that make me an anti Government capitalist.

There’s a big difference between protecting a brand new fledgling country in the 1700’s and protecting the most powerful country in the world in the 2000’s.

It's even more vital than ever to protect our industries from offshoring. Hey if Rush gives up his Free Traitor™ ways will followers like you do the same?

Really? An idiot?

Go read first what is calculated into the deficit then get back with me. Pay close attention to farming and overseas investors investing money here in the US then tell me how the deficit is oh so bad

We were warned about NAFTA et al when Cruz was in Jr. High. Not buying what you’re selling. Try someone else.

That's the thing. American businesses can't compete with the "global market" because the global market includes places like Zimbabwe where they get paid pennies. The result is that the manufacturing/industrial base of the United States is slowly but surely exported overseas.

Specific harmful regulations notwithstanding, there's no positive end game with unrestricted free trade. A real "trade" policy should be strategic and actually designed to benefit American businesses. That means placing taxes on things that hurt us and lowering regulations/tariffs on things that help us.

Millions of jobs across America, really? Point out those jobs created Ted. At least some of those that come to mind quickly.

Take your issue with our federal Government who has destroyed free trade or Bow before your master, the oh wonderful federal Government. Our own Federal Government destroyed manufacturing through overbearing regulations. Free trade didn’t do that

Makes no difference to me.

Uh, you’re the one challenging my assertions about the benefits of free international trade. If you don’t like it quit replying to me. However, you could learn something.

Was the U.S. better off in 1994 with $50 billion of imports and $50 billion of exports, or in 2015 with $296.4 billion of imports and $235.7 billion of exports?

"the 19th century economist and philosopher Frédéric Bastiat expressed the idea that trade deficits actually were a manifestation of profit, rather than a loss. He proposed as an example to suppose that he, a Frenchman, exported French wine and imported British coal, turning a profit. He supposed he was in France, and sent a cask of wine which was worth 50 francs to England. The customhouse would record an export of 50 francs. If, in England, the wine sold for 70 francs (or the pound equivalent), which he then used to buy coal, which he imported into France, and was found to be worth 90 francs in France, he would have made a profit of 40 francs. But the customhouse would say that the value of imports exceeded that of exports and was trade deficit against the ledger of France.

"By reductio ad absurdum, Bastiat argued that the national trade deficit was an indicator of a successful economy, rather than a failing one. Bastiat predicted that a successful, growing economy would result in greater trade deficits, and an unsuccessful, shrinking economy would result in lower trade deficits. This was later, in the 20th century, echoed by economist Milton Friedman." - Wikipedia

Free Traitor™ have no allegiance to any country and view borders as a nuisance. They crave centralized power which makes it easiey to do business with out all those petty jingoistic nationalist feelings.

I know that free trade creates wealth. I don’t know how NAFTA is set up.

Nor do I. And, most likely, neither do the great majority of Freepers. What we need is an actual Pros and Cons analysis based on the actual facts of the matter.

Any volunteers?
