Washington (CNN) — A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter. The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge.
Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
It is unclear what the charges are. A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.
On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.
Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.
The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation.
CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia. Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. Aside from that correction, I agree with your larger points. To which I'll add the following:
Comey was a horrible FBI director, acknowledged as such by virtually everyone in the DC-NY orbit. Comey's actions became so egregious that President Trump rightly fired him. So Comey turns around, engineers the appointment of Mueller, and what happens. Does anyone in the DC-NY orbit applaud President Trump for his absolutely 100% correct decision to fire Comey? Nope! Instead, both Republican and Democrat members of Congress (senate and house) threaten the President of the United States with impeachment if he fires Mueller.
However it all plays out, without question this is an attempted non-shooting coup d'etat.

Apparently there is so much coming out that Mueller has decided to WRAP IT UP! Probably some trivial technical violations for Manafort & a few others – akin to getting Al Capone for tax evasion. The Wall Street Journal has already called for Mueller to resign, as he is definitely compromised, based on everything coming out about Uranium One. The swamp will never be drained.

I turned CNN on at 10 EST to that news - almost fell out of bed. I thought about getting up and coming to the computer to check and see what was being said. An exclusive to CNN on a Friday night is as crooked and corrupt as anything we’ve seen from those bandits. Absolutely no other reason for only CNN to have that news. I turned on FOX and Jesse Watters didn’t know about it until about 10:15 or so. He said they’d keep it covered through the show but I didn’t see what they’d learned because I flipped back and forth.
CNN is so obsessed with FOX this week so they were in their glory. One panel person (don’t know who they are except the same old Gergen who should have died years ago) asked how they could go after Manafort (guessing he’s one of the ones indicted) for anything in his past unrelated to the Trump campaign and Anderson Cooper said, “Good question” and they cut for break. I didn’t see that question discussed after that.
Judge Jeanine filled in for Hannity at 9 pm and she didn’t have the news but she should be on fire tonight!!!
All I know is there’s nothing rotten in Denmark - it’s all ROTTEN in Washington, DC. If Mueller isn’t gone after this, I give up!!!
