I know a famous scientist who read the Bible for several years and eventually believed. Realizing he needed a church but not knowing any Christians personally to assist him, he devised a scientific approach to finding one.

He identified all the Christian churches within a twenty-mile radius and visited each on a series of Sunday mornings. He didn't go inside; rather, he observed the congregants from his car as they exited, which enabled him to observe several each Sunday; and he evaluated the churches based on two criteria: were the departees carrying Bibles, and did they appear happy? That narrowed his search to six churches, which he then subjected to another criterion before selecting ours.

Good test. But people assessing people “appearing happy” can be a snare when determining which church to choose.

That might have been a good formula but now many carry their Bible in their cellphone, including me. It was pointless to lug around a book that could get misplaced or lost when you could have God’s Word available on your cell at very little cost. When a conversation comes up and somebody asks “where in the Bible does it say...?” - boom, it’s right in my phone.

It can be if the other criteria used are deficient. But “people appearing unhappy” would be very telling. He was simply narrowing down his search from a hundred to a Bible-believing handful.

This was in the early ‘80s. I only have a flip-phone, but I’m mystified how I’d take notes on the pastor’s sermon next to the relevant text in my smart-phone.

People leaving meetings where Jonathan Edwards spoke most often appeared very unhappy. Most were soundly converted to an enduring faith.

Not ALL Presbyterian...Basically just the PCUSA...Most of the rest of us are very conservative....Especially the PCA!

Presbyterian Church of America. Broke away from the PCUSA back around ‘72ish... Very conservative and Bible based. One of those churches listed in the box was Redeemer Presbyterian in NY...Their pastor is Timothy Keller....Very influential man of God. Suprised they are listed as “not-clear”, although we are called to love the sinner and hate the sin.

It can be done with some types of Bible software and there are a few who make notes in the church program. Ours has a place where you can write out an entire outline.
