The judge deciding Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's punishment said Monday he is concerned that President Donald Trump's comments about the case could impact the public's perception of the military justice system.
Sentencing was set to begin Monday for Bergdahl on charges that he endangered comrades by walking off his post in Afghanistan in 2009. But the judge, Army Col. Jeffery R. Nance, instead heard last-minute arguments by defense attorneys that recent comments by Trump are preventing a fair proceeding. Bergdahl faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Nance allowed the attorneys to question him about whether he was swayed by Trump's comments. Nance said he wasn't aware of the comments beyond what was in the legal motions. Nance said he plans to retire as a colonel in about a year and isn't motivated by pleasing commanders to win a future promotion.
"I don't have any doubt whatsoever that I can be fair and impartial in the sentencing in this matter," Nance said.

The gallows on the National Mall at noon the day following.
Agreed. There is a very pronounced double standard being proposed by the left.
Hey Judge Jacksss; and the facts of the case are!?? Birddog cost four Americans their lives when they went looking for his sorry desserting ass.
Fairness of sentencing.
“I don’t have any doubt whatsoever that I can be fair and impartial in the sentencing in this matter,” Nance said.”
Translation: ARGO
With no knowledge of some facts, I’m going to guess the judge is a lefty and plans to give him a three month house arrest or some other stupid sentence and you’d better believe we will be jumpin’ ugly all over THAT jit !
So the sitting US President calling someone a hero and holding him at the White House isn’t command influence and the candidate running for office saying he’s a traitor is.
Well, least there’s no confusion among the public...
Trial is at Ft. Bragg.
Ft. Bragg.
The troops and their families might feel a little raw by now.
The traitor’s father was sporting a pubic hair beard while at the White House. Some men should never ever wear a beard. Yuck!
Liberals just “are”, anything that challenges their worldview is “bad”.
And Barack knew he had a deserter on his hands.
And he knew he was trading terrorists for a man who rejected the US military for the enemy in a time of war.
And he gloated in front of cameras.
The Chicago Tribune’s title is Fake News.
So many moslem beards look scraggly like that. Yuck indeed.
His statement contradicts the heading. typical liberal BS.
...and let the traitor hang until only the rope remains. Several good Patriots died looking for this waste.
“The gallows on the National Mall at noon the day following.”
Yep, he doesn’t even deserve the dignity of a firing squad. This scumbag should HANG BY THE NECK UNTIL DEAD.
He did fess up - this is about sentencing...
Mark,
I have two West Point Grads as Nephews.
One married a girl whose father is a Clinton Liberal beyond belief.
And there are many many more like him..
If this guy who is presiding over the trial and sentencing is a lib nutjob then he could give Bergdahl time served as the little darling had such a tough time while in enemy hands.
Course this guy deserves to be hanged.
UCMJ Article 85, paragraph c:
“Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, but if the desertion or attempt to desert occurs at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.
Get a new judge then.
The Presidents comments nor the publics perception of how the UCMJ operates is not what is on trial here.
