CAIRO (AP) - At least 54 policemen, including 20 officers and 34 conscripts, were killed when a raid on a militant hideout southwest of Cairo was ambushed, officials said Saturday. The ensuing firefight was one of the deadliest for Egyptian security forces in recent years.

Horrible.
54!?!!?!????????????!!!!!
Why would police be involved in a raid in such large numbers?!?!?!
Wouldn’t numbers like that usually involve the military, at least in a country like that?
I dont think we’d send police to overrun a militant hide out here, would we?
For instance, if we thought maybe 100 armed terrorists were at a certain location, wouldn’t we get the national guard or something involved?
Pretty sure that the National Guard doesn’t have that expertise. Although I guess they may have been used at WACO with their tanks and APC’s, etc.
I’m guessing that the Egpytian Police is more like our military. They probably have automatic weapons and fairly heavy vehicles.
And as the earlier poster said - probably people in the department that side with the militants. I’m guessing it would be difficult to make it an all Christian (and/or Jewish) police force in Eygpt.
If we faced something that large domestically it might be a matter for a state’s National Guard or multiple NG units. NG forces can also be “federalized” so that needed units can be brought across state lines. However, NG units vary a lot in composition and force structure, I believe, and many might not be suitable for such an attack on a terrorist hideout that might be armed with RPGs and much more. Some numbers of NG units are not really “infantry” but more specialized units.
We have the “Posse Comitatus Act” which prohibits use of the military forces for domestic law enforcement, although I’m not sure what the exact military role is allowed to be post-9/11. For instance, the issue of fighter aircraft possibly downing hijacked planes certainly arose, so there has been renewed debate about potential US military involvement domestically in a terrorist emergency, but I don’t know how the post-9/11 laws stand on that. I will try to look it up.

Did they all come from one direction, or even in the same vehicle? Unbelievably dumb, if so.
Moslim Brotherhood.
Horrible.
I know a supporter, an Egyptian here in US.
They want Sharia.
They kill Christians.
I support Sisi for he is trying to drag Egypt back out of the tribal past.
Why would police be involved in a raid in such large numbers?!?!?!

In a country like that the police is militarized even more than we are.
Conscripts? Are the police in Egypt drafted?
The officials said what happened next is not clear, but added that the force likely ran out of ammunition and that the militants captured several policemen and later killed them.
I think that was the FBI....(?)
In much of the world, there is little distinction between “military” and “police”; the latter is probably just stationed closer to home...
Next time, just drop a bomb on the hideout.
We could offer them a MOAB...
I’ve been wondering why we don’t treat jihadists as insurrectionists. Same with Antifa, since their intent is the overthrow of the gov’t. In that case, couldn’t the military be used? And we could hang the bad guys instead of putting them in jail for years?
“...but added that the force likely ran out of ammunition...”
I recall the story of some troops in Afghanistan (maybe a freeper) that were told to take as much ammo as they could out on missions/patrols. So they tossed an extra dufflebag of magazines in.
After they had their first encounter they filled every nook & cranny in their Humvee - and pulling off panels to create new ones - with spare magazines.
...were killed when a raid on a militant hideout southwest of Cairo was ambushed...
They ran out of ammo, and fell into a well-planned ambush? That's pretty close to the most stupid pair of things I've ever read. Arrive loaded for bear, and with overwhelming force, and from all available directions, including choppers equipped for close air support. Kill all the creeps who don't surrender, and try and then execute (muzzie-style) those who are captured. Broadcast video tours of the captured hideouts, showing the captured and/or expended arms used by the terrorists, and point the finger of blame where it belongs, which is Iran and/or Sudan.
