A fascinating collection of photos have resurfaced showing the hardships faced by German-Americans at the brutal height of the First World War. As Europe was ravaged by fighting, German immigrants in the US suffered harassment, internment, lynchings - and even the humiliation of being tarred and feathered.
Although a little-remembered part of history today, America was wracked by the fear and paranoia that swept from coast to coast during the Great War.
The United States declared war on Germany in April 1917 and helped lead the Allies to victory. But before that, many Americans were terrified of the German threat growing on the other side of the world.
This collection of pictures reveals the full extent of war hysteria and open hostility towards all things German that erupted across the nation.
Before the war broke out, America had welcomed German immigrants and regarded them highly. German was the second most widely spoken language in the country and there were over 100 million first and second-generation German-Americans living in the United States, with many of them involved in the thousands of German organizations across the country.
The United States embraced them and the German language became an established part of the high school curriculum.
But when the war broke out and Germany became the enemy of the Allies abroad, the American government began calling on its people to reject their German-American neighbors.
President Woodrow Wilson declared that German-Americans were to be treated as 'alien-enemies' and that they should reject their German identity if they were to be accepted in US society.

The sources that claim the Lusitania was transporting armaments date from the 1970s and much later. Noel Marshall’s claims are dubious, and Saul David’s credibility is questionable at best.
Then there were the Polish Pilots of 303rd who saved their bacon during the Battle of Britain, only to be sold out to Stalin in the end.
Yes, I deny it, as well as the credibility of sources such as Saul David and Noel Marshall, the latter of whom was casting aspersions when viewing a UK government paper warning divers exploring the wreck of risks “to life and limb”.
The Cruiser Rules were clear, and the Second Reich clearly had no regard for them, further cementing their rogue entity status. There were indeed a number of Q-ships that had on-board guns, but the Lusitania had none.
German Americans in WW1; Japanese, German and Italian Americans in WW2; blacks, Jews and Catholics under the KKK.

The passengers of the Lusitania were warned by newspaper ads that they would be sailing into a war zone......German intelligence had found out the Lusitania would be carrying war materials (violation of US neutrality).......there were two explosions reported but only one torpedoe fired!!!!!
For decades the UK navy would NOT allow diving on or near the wreck. Is that because it would confirm the German version that the Lusitania was carrying war materials?
Yes the US had NO business getting into WWI!!! Doing so was to save the NY bankers, who had loaned millions to Britain/France!!

Again, you are wrong. One of the great challenges Wilson faced in his efforts to get America into the war was the Monroe doctrine.
It was seen throughout our government as a separation between the old world and new world. Unless someone attacked America, we also were secure that idiotic European wars did not involve us. The part of the Monroe doctrine you are referring to was intended to keep European wars from spilling over to the Americas.
It worked well until Wilson wanted to jump into a European war.
Was it? I’m looking at all the sources that claim it did, and they seem to all be on the left. Torpedo impacts would have set off such munitions, besides, but it was only the torpedo damage that sank the ship.

So was a blockaid of neutral shipping. The Royal Navy forbade any neutral American ship from entering a German port.
But that is the story of WWI propaganda. Brits can do any violation they please. The Germans are wanton war criminals.

And then someone attacked America on the Lusitania, killing 128 Americans. And nothing was done about it. Clear violation of the Cruiser Rules by Germany.
The Monroe Doctrine is not a declaration of passivity. Take note of the 1902 Venezuela crisis, which had both the German and British empires on the same side on many issues.
If I recall correctly, Eisenhower, Nimitz and Halsey were of German ancestry.

And everyone forgets, the first hundred years of our nation the Brits waited for any opportunity to destroy our republic. It wasn’t until they could find a soft headed president like Wilson and harness our power for their goals that we suddenly had a “special friendship”.
Even in WWII the Brits were more concerned about preserving their empire than killing off the Nazis and Jap nations. Our men in the China/Burma/India theater were very convinced of this. So were our guys in the Mediterranean.
The difference is the British and other belligerents, both in the Entente and Central Powers never engaged in unrestricted, unprovoked attacks against neutral shipping. The Entente naval forces boarded and searched neutral ships and turned them away. The didn't just sneak up and pump a torpedo into them.
Germany's practice was wrong.
The Germans didn’t exactly “sneak up”, they announced their plans ahead of time and gave fair warning.
